Dear Partner in Ministry,
One of the great privileges of my life has been spending my career studying the heavens. As an astronomer, I have spent nights beneath dark skies, predicted the motions of the Moon and planets, helped develop astronomical standards, and
marveled at the extraordinary precision of the universe. Yet for all of the science involved, I have never found that understanding the cosmos diminishes its wonder. If anything, it deepens it.
Psalm 19 begins, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." Science can tell us how stars are born, why planets move as they do, and how light has traveled millions of years to reach our eyes. Faith invites us to ask a different question: what does such beauty awaken within us? Awe, gratitude, humility, and wonder are not scientific measurements, but they are very real ways we encounter God's creation.
That is the spirit behind our upcoming Sacred Spaces stargazing evening on July 25th. My hope is that we can slow down together, lift our eyes from our busy lives, and experience the quiet wonder of creation. Whether you know the night sky well or have never looked through a telescope before, there is something profoundly peaceful about gathering under the stars with others. I hope you'll join us. Bring your curiosity and your questions. Together we'll discover that one of the most sacred spaces we can enter is the vast canopy of stars that has inspired humanity—and drawn hearts toward God—for thousands of years.
Susan
