Dear Partner in Ministry,
One of the great privileges of my life has been spending my career studying the heavens. As an astronomer, I have spent nights beneath dark skies, predicted the motions of the Moon and planets, helped develop astronomical standards, and
marveled at the extraordinary precision of the universe. Yet for all of the science involved, I have never found that understanding the cosmos diminishes its wonder. If anything, it deepens it.
Psalm 19 begins, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." Science can tell us how stars are born, why planets move as they do, and how light has traveled millions of years to reach our eyes. Faith invites us to ask a different question: what does such beauty awaken within us? Awe, gratitude, humility, and wonder are not scientific measurements, but they are very real ways we encounter God's creation.
That is the spirit behind our upcoming Sacred Spaces stargazing evening on July 25th. My hope is that we can slow down together, lift our eyes from our busy lives, and experience the quiet wonder of creation. Whether you know the night sky well or have never looked through a telescope before, there is something profoundly peaceful about gathering under the stars with others. I hope you'll join us. Bring your curiosity and your questions. Together we'll discover that one of the most sacred spaces we can enter is the vast canopy of stars that has inspired humanity—and drawn hearts toward God—for thousands of years.

Susan
P.S. Details for the Sacred Spaces Stargazing event are below.

    Top Five @ GTownPres
    1. Join Us for Worship, this Sunday, July 19th, at 10:00am in person or on YouTube. Rev. Jessica Tate will be preaching.
    2. Every gift to GPC250 matters, and together we can achieve our goal. Our youngest donor is just 8 years old and gave $5 — a beautiful reminder that this campaign belongs to all of us, not just a few. Visit gtownpres.org/250 to make your 3-year pledge today.
    3. Sacred Spaces: Join us for stargazing at the Steven Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly next Saturday, July 25th, from 8:30-10:30pm. We'll be joined by GPC member, Dr. Susan Stewart, who is an astronomer at the U.S. Naval Observatory.  This is a free public event. We'll gather at 8:30 pm with Susan before joining museum staff to view the night sky through their telescopes. Contact Pastor Meghan to carpool or RSVP.  Our next Sacred Spaces event is Kayaking on August 22nd.
    4. Serve good food to hungry neighbors: Every fourth Saturday of the month, GPC serves dinner to our hungry neighbors as part of the Georgetown Saturday suppers. We can always use more help to bring food and serve food. It’s 4-6pm at Mt. Zion UMC, a few blocks from GPC (1334 29th Street). Email missions@gtownpres.org to be added to the volunteer email list or reach out to GPC member and coordinator, Keshia Engwenyi.
    5. Volunteer for the Excel Academy back to school event August 21st! Every year, GPC supports the families of Excel Academy (a GPC Mission Partner and DCPS public school) with school uniforms. Join for this fun event to meet the students and families and hand out uniforms. Be in touch with Pastor Jessica or email mission@gtownpres.org to volunteer.
