GRANDPARENTS AND FAMILY FRIENDS DAY APRIL 13:
PLEASE REMIND YOUR GUESTS TO RSVP

Invitations for this full-day event were sent prior to Spring Break to guests for whom our families have provided contact information. RSVPs are due April 6 and are trickling in. Please check with your invitees to make sure they received their invitations, and please ask them to let us know whether or not they'll be joining us so we can plan for food and seating and the day's festivities. Please RSVP via email to Steph Powers, or call 413-339-4912, x119.

Call for High Tea Fare: Headmaster’s Tea for Grandparents and Family Friends Day on Friday, April 13

Rebekah Boyd (P'18, 19) is again organizing the details for the Headmaster's Tea on April 13, a signature afternoon event for grandparents and other guests. She requests donations of "high tea" fare — small bite cookies, petit fours, cream puffs, lady fingers, shortbread, chocolate covered strawberries, pound cake, candied almonds, etc. Items can be delivered that morning.

If you are able to offer such an item, please call 413-625-6260 or email Rebekah. Thank you!

FILM SCREENING: "13th", April 13th at 3:45pm

Please join the Social Justice Council for a screening of the award-winning documentary “13th”. Food and beverages will be for sale, and all profits will go to The Innocence Project, an organization working to exonerate the wrongly convicted reform the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice.

"13th" is an extremely powerful film by Ava DuVernay that explores the "intersection of race, justice and mass incarceration in the United States" and it is titled after the Thirteenth Amendment to the US Constitution, which freed the slaves and prohibited slavery (unless as punishment for a crime). You can watch the trailer here. The screening is our second in a series of social justice oriented films for the The Academy's community. Come see the film, enjoy delicious food and drinks, have a discussion, and remember to bring your friends!

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE - FRIDAY, APRIL 20

The Red Cross returns to campus for the spring Blood Drive at
The Academy!
The Blood Drive will be held on Friday, April 20, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM. Students will be bringing home donor forms, with the goal of every student finding at least one person to donate blood. Appointments can be made by filling out the donor form, or by calling the Main Office during regular business hours, or by visiting the Red Cross Blood Drive appointment page and entering our zip code. Baked goods for donors are also a high priority, so there are ways for everyone to lend a hand. We appreciate in advance your support of this important service event!  Not only does collecting blood save lives, but with enough donations, also provides college scholarships for our seniors.

Please contact Nora Bates Zale with any questions.

GIRLS' NIGHT IN - April 21 (5 PM Saturday to 10 AM Sunday)
The Academy's senior women are continuing the tradition of hosting a Girls’ Night In, following its revival last year. First established by alum Gracie Hall (2012), Girls’ Night In is an opportunity for all of the women at The Academy to get to know each other better, boost each other's self-esteem, and have tons of fun. Activities will include movies, a potluck dinner, games, and bonding exercises. Seniors and faculty will provide breakfast in the morning, and each student is responsible for bringing her own pajamas, toiletries, and sleeping bag/pillows. The event will be chaperoned by female Academy faculty and staff members, and all female Academy students are welcome. Attendees are requested to spend the night, but in recognition of the fact that conflicts are a part of life, individual students should talk with Mrs. BZ if arrangements need to be made to participate without sleeping over.
Potluck dinner assignments will be distributed next week.
Students who plan to attend should RSVP to one of the senior girls.
Please be in contact with Mrs. BZ or
Ella D. with any questions.

MIDDLE SCHOOL INFORMATION SESSION FOR

STUDENTS AND FAMILIES INTERESTED IN GRADES 6-7-8:
APRIL 22, 3 - 4:30 PM

Please help us spread the word about this opportunity for new families to get to know The Academy. We'll be gathering at the Northampton home of Jennifer Rosner and Bill Corwin. For more information contact Martha Tirk.

CUBA CULTURAL EXPLORATION:
SLIDE SHOW AND COMMUNITY POT LUCK MAY 15

Please join us for a slide show and presentation about our Spring Break trip to Cuba. We'll gather in the recital hall at 5:30 PM on May 15. Beverages and all utensils will be provided. Bring a labeled dish to share, along with your questions. We look forward to sharing our amazing experience with the community!
April is Grove Season
Time to purchase a yearbook ad for your graduating senior - or your business!
It's that time - we'll be kicking off ad sales for our yearbook, The Grove, directly after spring break. All students will be assigned an ad to sell (or multiple ads -- returning students are given the same ad or ads that they sold last year, new students are assigned new customers). The sale of an ad generates a free yearbook for the selling student; students who do not sell an ad will be charged for the cost of their yearbook (approximately $15). Selling an ad, however helps to build community relationships with local businesses as well as to cover printing costs - students' participation in this goes beyond the benefit of a free yearbook.

Parents of the graduating class often purchase ad space to congratulate their seniors -- these ads count towards the free yearbook for the corresponding student. Parents who are business owners are also welcome to work with their student to purchase an ad. If you are interested in creating an ad for your senior or business, please review this link for details on sizes and specs, complete this ad contract and send it along with the ad to grove@charlemont.org, or send in a hard copy. Hard copies of ads or ad contracts, questions, and concerns can be directed to Nora Bates Zale. The deadline for ad sales is April 27.
CLASSROOM CLOSE-UPS
Izzy B is a gracious winner as she is victorious over Solly C in a game of Radian War during Mr. Almeida's Precalculus class.
Physics 2 students explore the motion of wave pulses along a slinky.
Physics 2 students Ella D, Lilah F and Macy K begin their investigation of wave motion by constructing a gummy bear wave machine.

The Academy’s GSA

by Ruby Chase
The Academy’s GSA works to support the LGBTQ+ community, in an effort to make our school feel more embracing of all genders and sexualities. It's important to note that our student-run GSA is a “Gender and Sexuality Alliance,” which makes it more inclusive. Academy students really care about the community as a whole and how we can make it more inclusive for all. Twice monthly, the GSA meets to discuss topics relevant to the LGBTQ+ community including current events or upcoming projects, and also provides an opportunity for anyone to raise issues that are important to them.

Last semester a number of Academy GSA members attended the GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) Conference in Westfield. School-based GSAs from all over the country participated. We also purchased a rainbow flag to put on the school's flagpole. It was an easy thing to do and we hope it will inspire more support for the LGBTQ+ community. Our upcoming projects include participating in the Pride Parade in Northampton in May and possibly Greenfield in June. These marches celebrate LGBTQ+ culture and pride. We will also organize a day of silence (a day where people choose to spend a day in silence to spread awareness about the effects of the bullying and harassment of LGBTQ+ people), and a larger goal for our GSA is to visit elementary schools in the area to talk to students about being good allies. We would draw and create posters with the kids with positive messages about the LGBTQ+ community. We’ve done a lot of work this semester and we’re excited for more to come!
If you would like more information about the GSA email Sophia C or Sam F.

ANNUAL FUND 2018

With three months to go until the end of our fiscal year, we're a little over halfway to our Annual Fund Goal of $250,000. If you haven't yet made your gift or your pledge, please do so here. Parents, we're currently at a 72% participation rate, and we're aiming for 100%! Every gift matters, every day. Thank you for your generosity.
Youth Conference on Sexual Harrassment, September 2018:
Seeking Speakers

In late September 2018, The Academy at Charlemont's Social Justice Council will hold a conference on the topic of sexual harassment. Smith College will host the event. The goal of this conference is to educate students about different aspects of sexual harassment through keynote speeches and specialized breakout sessions with themes such as slut shaming, rape culture, and the media’s impact on this issue. Participating students will have the opportunity to talk to each other and academics in the field about ways to prevent and halt recurring patterns of harassment on both small and large scales. This conference aims to help young adults dismantle the system of sexual harassment in schools, workplaces, and throughout the community. Any ideas for possible speakers, presenters, etc. are welcomed, and should be shared with Sophia C and Nora Bates Zale.

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Spring vacation didn't quite break the cycle of illness in our community so please remember that to keep us all healthy, students must be fever-free and symptom free for at least 24 hours before returning to school. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
