Dear Tufts University community members,
I am writing to update you on an incident that occurred in the early hours of November 1 in Medford near our campus. Around 1 a.m., while conducting a routine patrol, two Medford Police officers heard gunshots in the vicinity of 364 Boston Avenue. Medford Police officers responded to the scene and carried out an investigation with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police and the Tufts University Police Department (TUPD).
During this investigation, a firearm and several shell casings were recovered. The suspect was seen fleeing away from the vicinity of the campus toward Bellevue Avenue. As of now, there are no known victims, and no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. We do not believe there is an active and ongoing threat at this time.
State and local authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, and TUPD will continue to work closely with law enforcement and increase patrols of the area out of an abundance of caution to ensure our community’s safety.
If you have any information that could assist in the investigation, please call the Medford Police Department Detective Division at 781-395-1212. If you feel unsafe and need support, please reach out to Tufts University Public Safety at 617-627-3030.
The safety and well-being of our campus community are our top priorities. We will keep you informed with any updates as they become available.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Yolanda L. Smith, Chief of Police & Executive Director of Public Safety
