Dear Eagle Nation:
As we enter Women's History Month, Coppin State University, an HBCU named after a pioneering woman, proudly stands with the global community in honoring and acknowledging the remarkable achievements of women throughout history. This year’s theme, "Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion," resonates deeply with our university's values.
Fanny Jackson Coppin, an extraordinary figure, transcended barriers as a teacher, missionary, principal, and advocate for females in higher education. Born into slavery, her journey to freedom and subsequent dedication to education are testament to her unwavering sense of purpose. As the first African American woman to lead an institution of higher learning, she blazed a trail, ensuring that African Americans had access to quality, affordable education.

Throughout history, women have played pivotal roles in shaping societies, challenging norms, and championing causes for a fair and inclusive world. At Coppin State University, our students, faculty, staff, and alumni honor Fanny Jackson Coppin’s legacy by leading with grace, poise, and advocating for change in their respective fields.
With more than three-quarters of our student body being women, they also hold crucial roles in university leadership and governance. Visionary women occupy key positions as deans, professors, administrators, fortifying our commitment to equality and education. These women are recognized for their research, leadership, dedication, and impact on both the state and national levels.

Interim Dean of the College of Health Professions, Dr. Joan S. Tilghman, was honored for the third time by the Maryland Daily Record as one of its Top 100 Women in 2023. Associate Director/Senior Woman Administrator, Dr. Nichole Person, is a part of the first all-women MEAC executive leadership team. Dr. Tenyo Pearl, Program Coordinator for our Nonprofit Leadership Program, was acknowledged by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education as one of the leading women in higher education.

Our faculty members continue to make a difference on and beyond the university. Dr. Yi-Ping Huang, the founding Executive Director of the Center for Inclusive Excellence, holds the distinguished position of a research professor. With her visionary leadership, Dr. Huang spearheads the advancement of the Pathways to Professions (P2P) MicroCredentials and MicroResidencies, initiatives seamlessly integrated throughout the state of Maryland.
Dr. Karen Santos Rogers, serving as the Chair of the Teaching and Learning Department, has played a pivotal role in expanding Coppin State University's academic offerings. Her notable contribution includes the addition of a Master's in Teacher Education Leadership to Coppin State's portfolio. This strategic move not only enhances the university's academic standing but also addresses the imperative need for increased diversity in the education field by fostering the development of a more varied and talented pool of educators.

We also celebrate the achievements of our talented athletes. Congratulations to Freshman Victoria Davis for earning the title of MEAC Rookie of the Week in Bowling, and to Freshman Emily Quintero for securing the MEAC Softball Rookie of the Week recognition.

Mayor Brandon M. Scott Launches HBCU Fellowship Initiative

Mayor Brandon M. Scott has collaborated with Baltimore Corp, Coppin State University, and Morgan State University to launch the Mayor’s HBCU Fellowship Initiative. The partnership, announced on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at Baltimore City Hall, aims to provide recent graduates with hands-on experience and to create a pipeline into local government careers for the next generation of leaders.

Director in the Office of Special Education Programs visits Coppin State
Dr. Valerie Williams, Director in the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) met with President Jenkins to discuss the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in which she oversees. IDEA provides discretionary grants to HBCUs, minority serving institutions, tribal colleges, and other non-profit organizations to support grant writing efforts.

Coppin State Unveiled Newly Commissioned Sculpture
Coppin State partnered with the Maryland State Arts Council to unveil a newly commissioned sculpture on the campus. Titled 'Community of Stars,' the sculpture is prominently located in front of the College of Business. Artist Nnamdi Okonkwo created this piece as a representation of students as stars, casting light upon the Coppin community.

White House HBCU Scholars Application
The 2024 HBCU Scholar Recognition Program Application is now open, courtesy of The White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Development through Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
The Initiative is actively seeking exceptional and talented student leaders from HBCUs to participate in this prestigious program. Those chosen will collaborate with the Initiative for an entire academic school year, engaging in an immersive experience alongside fellow students and partners from diverse disciplines.
The nomination period closes April 19, 2024.
