"Family"
David Sikes
 Oil on Luan veneer 36” (w) by 24” (h)
"Family" is from a black and white photograph taken in the 1980s in Egypt by a friend.  She gave me a copy when I was living in Cairo.  I had sold a smaller painting, but missed it so much I painted a larger version.
David Sikes
I am a native Californian and have lived in Pasadena since the late 1970s with an interlude of an eight-year period working and living overseas in Saudi Arabia.  A UCLA and USC graduate with an emphasis on urban studies, I have worked in the area of municipal planning for 35 years.  My love for urban and city environments is reflected in my oil paintings.
I experimented with painting on canvas, paper, and metal before landing on my medium of choice - Luan wood veneer. Luan is a wonderful, smooth surface that also provides interesting variation and texture. This foundation imbues my detailed and colorful works with a unique look.  I love how the wood grain interplays with the paint and gives an extra dimension to the pieces.

Warm greetings to all PSA members and friends !!

I can’t believe we are approaching the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic.  It was just one year ago, March 7th, when we had a large meeting of 37 at Blinn House. Nora Koerber gave us a fine presentation of her work.  We were all being careful not to hug, shake hands, nor pass around art work.  I contacted everyone who had attended within the next month to see if any COVID-19 had been transmitted.  We were lucky that we weren’t a super-spreader event.  My heart goes out to you all who have been impacted by the lockdown, shutdown, infections and related illnesses. In my family, we have had two COVID-19-related deaths and in my circle of friends, one death and numerous infected persons who have recovered.

We will continue Zoom meetings on a monthly basis, hoping to identify a new volunteer to host our meetings.  PSA has our own Zoom account, but we need someone willing to host the monthly meetings.  Contact our Secretary, Rhonda Raulston, if you are interested.  Our upcoming March meeting is our Annual Membership meeting, during which we will hold election of Officers and confirmation of Committee Chairs.

My second three-year term ended last June, but was extended because of the pandemic.  It's time for another to take my place March 6th, becoming the new visionary and leader for PSA.  I will remain on the Board as Immediate Past President.  Please see the accompanying notice about PSA Elections.

PSA has greatly improved in these ways during the past six years:

a more friendly organization;
• an increase in cultural/racial and art expression diversity;
• wonderful exhibitions, new virtual exhibitions and catalogs of our art;
• more dedicated volunteers;
• more effective community partnerships;
• enriched organizational management skills;
• new Bylaws and organizational chart;
• improved newsletter;
• new website; and
• more grants and more friendships.

I am pleased to have been a vital part of this high tide of artists' activity and organizational progress.

I am ready for a dedicated member to take my place, and I will continue to support PSA however I can.  Thank you for what you have done for PSA, and for your continued support in our 96-year-old organization.

Sincerely,
Victor Picou
PSA President 2013-2021

Exhibition News

Here’s the latest news from the Exhibition Committee:

With the addition of Art Carrillo and Tom Oldfield, the Exhibition Committee is currently working on creating a new exhibition management team.  Exhibitions will start in the next few weeks.  In the current plans are the New Members Showcase, the 96th Annual Juried Exhibition, an Artist’s Choice exhibition, an exhibition for oil & acrylic artworks, a 3-D artwork exhibition, and more.  All exhibitions will be online and selected exhibitions will feature a gallery installation along with a full-color printed catalog.

So keep an eye on your email box for upcoming exhibition announcements.  And polish up your artwork photography skills in preparation for the online entry process. We hope to see a whole bunch of new and exciting artwork entered into all of the exhibitions during 2021.

Hopefully this coming fall PSA can return to presenting gallery installations with artists' receptions.

The Exhibition Committee is always looking for new venues and interesting exhibition ideas.  Don’t be shy, send your ideas and recommendations to:  Exhibitions@PasadenaSocietyofArtists.org

Thanks,

The Exhibition Committee
