Dear friends and colleagues,
Our situation changes almost daily, and nearly all of us are facing new and unprecedented challenges.
From ER doctors, to grocery store workers, to parents home-schooling their children, to restaurant workers laid off from their jobs, we are all on the “front lines” of COVID-19 in one way or another.
Today, The Data Center releases up-to-date COVID-19 stats including:
  • Cases and deaths in New Orleans
  • Tests and cases in Louisiana and New Orleans
  • Confirmed cases of COVID-19 infections per 100,000 residents in New Orleans compared with other U.S. hot spots
  • Confirmed cases of COVID-19 infections across Louisiana
And very soon we’ll release demographic comparisons between New Orleans and other U.S. hot spots.
In brief, while New Orleans has only .01% of the population in the United States, as of March 24 at noon, New Orleans has experienced 3.9% of all COVID-19 deaths across the U.S.
For every 100,000 residents living in Orleans Parish, there are approximately 172 confirmed cases of COVID-19, higher than much larger counties such as Cook County where Chicago is located, King County where Seattle is located, Los Angeles County, and Wayne County where Detroit is located.
The higher number of infections per resident in New Orleans suggests we will quickly deplete our health care resources such as hospital beds and ventilators. This is why it is especially important to practice social distancing to slow the rate of transmission. The goal is to  “flatten the curve” or to reduce the burden on our limited medical resources, so that when you do get sick, from COVID-19 or any other medical condition, there are doctors and nurses available to help you.
