When it comes to Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI), recall that the Office of the Provost “encourages instructors to state explicitly and affirmatively their expectations regarding student use of GAI tools.” There is no one-size-fits-all policy for GAI. Depending on their specific context, faculty or programs may choose to generally or selectively allow or prohibit the use of GAI tools. Whichever approach you take needs to be communicated to students.
To help with this communication, check out The AI Assessment Scale by Perkins, Furze, Roe & MacVaugh (2024). This scale has been adopted at schools and universities worldwide and was presented at UNESCO. In addition to helping communicate expectations to your students, it could provide a helpful framework for your own thinking or research.
