The NJIT Center for Translational Research is committed to promoting excellence in collaborative research, innovation partnerships, entrepreneurial pathways, education, training and infrastructure development to translate technology into applications with a high societal and economic impact. The mission of the NJIT Center for Translational Research (CTR) is to advance NJIT as a regional and national leader in research and innovation translation in areas ranging from healthcare, to environment and energy sustainability, to digital infrastructure and machine learning.
The CTR provides seed funding, workshops and networking, training and mentoring opportunities to accelerate technology innovation and the translation of academic research and discoveries into tangible commercial solutions through market validation, entrepreneurship and commercialization initiatives. CTR serves as a hub to engage students, faculty and stakeholders to develop strategic partnerships facilitating roadmaps to technology innovation translation to further enhance NJIT’s Research, Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (RITE) ecosystem for societal and economic impact. Inaugural NJIT NSF ARTISAN (Accelerating Research Translation Integrated Student Network) Workshop on NJIT Undergraduate Student Presentations
The first workshop of the NJIT NSF ART Student Ambassador Network (ARTISAN) - Undergraduate Student Translational Research Presentation Workshop took place remotely via Zoom on September 27, 2024. This initiative, part of the NSF ART program, seeks to encourage innovative and entrepreneurial thinking among students, fostering research that benefits society and the economy. Four NJIT undergraduate students, winners of the Dr. James Stevenson Innovation Awards at the NJIT Summer Research Symposium, presented their award-winning applied and translational research projects. CTR Workshop on Translational Research in Generative AI and Digital Twins: Design to Manufacturing
The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) hosted a workshop on Translational Research in Generative AI and Digital Twins, attended by over 130 participants, including faculty from NJIT, Rutgers, and Rowan universities, industry representatives from Siemens, AWS, Stryker, and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, as well as government bodies like the U.S. Army and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. The workshop focused on the collaboration between academia, industry, and government to bring technology innovations to market, particularly in the fields of AI, Digital Twins, plasma fusion energy, healthcare, and materials science. Key highlights included a keynote by Virginie Maillard, panel discussions on the transformative potential of AI technologies, and discussions on managing biases and risks while keeping a "human-in-the-loop" approach. The event was sponsored by NJIT’s Center for Translational Research and funded by the NSF Accelerating Research Translation program and the National Academy of Inventors chapter at NJIT. CTR Workshop on Intellectual Property and Tech Transfer in Translational Research
The CTR Workshop on Intellectual Property and Tech Transfer in Translational Research, held on November 21, 2024, at the CKB Agile Lab, was a well-attended event that attracted faculty, researchers, students, and external partners interested in advancing technology for societal benefit. The workshop, organized by the Center for Translational Research, aimed to enhance the research, innovation, and entrepreneurship ecosystem at NJIT through panel discussions and breakout sessions. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with experts on intellectual property (IP), tech transfer, licensing, and funding strategies, focusing on IP acquisition, patent processes, and the commercialization of innovations.
A key highlight was the Distinguished Keynote by Elizabeth Dougherty, Eastern Regional Outreach Director at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), who shared insights into the latest developments at the USPTO, including streamlined IP acquisition processes and recruitment opportunities for patent examiners. Additionally, participants gained valuable knowledge on NJIT's new Technology Transfer Office, engaging in discussions on licensing and enterprise development.
The event provided a platform for learning and networking, offering essential knowledge for those pursuing translational research and innovation, and creating pathways for future commercialization and societal impact. Read more and watch video recording.

NSF ART (Accelerating Research Translation) Network Portal
The NJIT Center for Translational Research is developing the ART Network Portal website, which will serve as a platform and resource for all awardees funded by the ART program. This portal will allow them to share information about their translational research projects, including STRPs, and foster stronger collaborative synergies and innovation partnerships. The goal is to advance the translation of technologies into use-inspired applications that have a societal impact, contributing to the creation of a national ART network ecosystem. More to come!
