Summer break = cybersecurity education for Oregon's middle and high school students! See how Oregon's universities are engaging students in Cyber Camps and other activities, with more updates to come from the many other camps this summer. And as always, read on for upcoming educational events for those beyond school years, too. 

OSU's Summer Programming Reaches 115 Middle and High Schoolers

In June and July, OSU cybersecurity outreach was in full swing. Through NW Cyber Camps at OSU and partnerships with Academia Juntos, the 4-H Summer Conference, and the Migrant Engineering Institute, the OSU team introduced 115 Oregon middle and high school students to cybersecurity concepts, career pathways, and safe online practices. 

Kira Mudd, an alumna of the OSU GenCyber Teacher Camp and UO NICE programs, led NW Cyber Camps at OSU, including piloting a new camp for middle school students and developing new curriculum featuring Sphero coding robots.

OSU cybersecurity undergraduate students developed and led hands-on activities for partner programs such as 4-H, strengthening their leadership and communication skills while teaching younger students about phishing, open-source intelligence (OSINT), and cybersecurity education and career pathways.

Participants also toured OSU's ORTSOC—the Nation’s First Cybersecurity Teaching Hospital™, for a firsthand look at how OSU students are helping organizations monitor and respond to digital threats.

Oregon Tech's Highlights From Middle and High School Cyber Camps 

Oregon Tech Newsroom reports: "Oregon Tech recently hosted two free cybersecurity camps for middle and high school students, giving participants the opportunity to learn about online safety, cybersecurity tools, and technology career pathways."

"Both camps were designed and led by Praveen Guraja, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Cybersecurity and Information Technology, and Manish Nalluri, Visiting Instructor in Applied Computing and Geomatics."

"In Cyber Explorers: Defend, Discover, Design, middle school students were introduced to cybersecurity concepts through activities focused on digital citizenship, online safety, passwords, phishing detection, cryptography, and basic cybersecurity investigations." 

High school students in Cyber Ops: Hack, Defend, Secure, explored more advanced topics, including ethical hacking, digital forensics, network analysis, cryptography, and cyber defense tools."

CAE National Cyber and AI Virtual Career Fair 9/22

This event is open to students, faculty, and alumni from over 470 institutions designated as Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD), Cyber Operations (CAE-CO), and Research (CAE-R) and institutions in the Candidate's Program (pending approval).

All students, faculty, and alumni of OCCoE's founding institutions (UO, OSU, PSU), plus Portland Community College and Mt. Hood Community college are eligible to attend this virtual career fair as members of CAE designated institutions.

Oregon Cybersecurity Awareness & Preparedness Summit in Pendleton 9/30

LBL Cybersecurity and the State of Oregon Enterprise Information Services Cyber Security Services (EIS CSS) team are partnering to bring Cybersecurity Summits and Tabletop Exercises to communities across Oregon.

This FREE Cybersecurity Awareness & Preparedness Summit is designed to help organizations better understand today’s evolving cyber threats while building practical awareness, readiness, and response capabilities in a collaborative environment.

Unlike a full tabletop exercise, these sessions focus on high-impact presentations, guided discussions, and practical preparedness training that organizations can immediately apply within their teams. Cybersecurity Technology Roadmapping: A Systems Approach for the Challenge

In a world that is transforming digitally, cybersecurity is both a line of defense and a vulnerability for many organizations. While big corporations can afford to be protected, smaller organizations and the public sector, which make up the majority of the economies of the world, are becoming extremely vulnerable every passing day. Artificial intelligence is rattling the battlefield, providing ammunition to both sides. We at the Oregon Cybersecurity Center of Excellence focus our efforts on educating and creating awareness in sectors ranging from energy to health. We have worked closely with the US Department of Defense, the National Security Agency, and other national and local agencies to identify technological gaps and R&D opportunities in the cybersecurity field through technology roadmaps. This talk will provide insight to these efforts.
