Congratulations to our Middle School Girls Basketball team on their outstanding season! Coach Boles shared that "Our Varsity went 10-0 and JV went 9-1. Our JV lost solely because everyone was sick and we only had six girls, so I consider them to be undefeated in spirit." Go Eagles!

|
This season we had some of the best and brightest students representing LCA in Elementary Basketball. Our Eagles brought home multiple championship trophies, dominating the courts. This was hands down one of the best seasons yet. Go Eagles and thank you coaches!!!

LCA first grader Emmeline was in Chess Club last year as a kindergartener and again this year. She is a wonderful chess player and Mrs. Friedland recommended to her parents that she might want to participate in two chess tournaments in Tacoma. Emmeline won a 7th place trophy in the K-1st division at her most recent tournament. Between the two tournaments, she has earned three points, which is enough for her to go to the state Elementary Chess Championship at the end of April. She will participate in one more tournament before the state tournament. We are so proud of her!

Congratulations to our Knowledge Bowl team! They ended up taking 5th place at the State Tournament.
There were 18 2-B teams at the State Competition in Wenatchee, divided into two divisions. After the written round and four orals rounds, LCA had the top score (questions answered) of 135, 20 more than any other team.
The top nine teams went to the semifinal. In our semifinal (against two other teams), we ran up against a tough and quick Seton Catholic team. Seton answered 18 questions, we answered 17 questions, and the third team answered four questions. Seton moved on to the championship round while we played for 4th, 5th, or 6th. In our last round, we tied our opponent 17-17, but lost the 10 question tiebreaker, which put us in 5th place. The 17 questions answered were more than any of the three teams competing for first place.
We would like to give a big shout out to Stan Seely. He has been the Head Coach of Knowledge Bowl for many, many years and this was his last year in this role. Our program is where it is because of Stan. Thank you Mr. O!!!!
Our team at State this year included Aramis, Thomas, Hayden, Katherine, Trystan, and Marc. A big congratulations to these six, along with the rest of our Knowledge Bowl team!

A Note From Mrs. Warmbier
Dear Parents,
One of the newest tech advances that has come to the forefront of our professional development conversations has been the emergence of a product called ChatGPT. ChatGPT is one of the many new Artificial Intelligence programs that can create documents, letters, and even scripts for plays. It creates original products that are difficult to identify using some of our current tools.
It has been interesting to see the way the educational world has reacted to this increase in Artificial Intelligence. Some schools are completely banning it, others are saying it will be the end of the classroom teachers, and yet some have decided to embrace it.
We would like to share with you our strategy for utilizing A.I. as a tool for learning. Education at LCA has long understood that it is more important to learn what questions to ask rather than to memorize content. If I don't understand why a decision should be made, or if we should even be making that decision, it does not matter if I have memorized the right words to say. We want to equip our students with skills that allow them to evaluate, critically think, and creatively use their knowledge.
With the philosophy of Marzano's educational framework, we are investigating how we utilize ChatGPT, and similar programs, to not produce work for students, but to enable them to spend more time engaging in higher level thinking skills. The reality is, we have entered a new era: the era of A.I., and we’re not going to stop students by banning the likes of ChatGPT from school devices or school IT networks. They will access it from home or from their phones. It’s not difficult.
We are constantly trying to improve our knowledge of ourselves and the world, and how we see the world through the lens of Christ. Please reach out if you would like to discuss this topic more, or have any questions or concerns.
Halle Warmbier Upper School Principal
