From the Dean

This edition of IDEAS announces the college’s first Cornerstone Gift. Carla and Mitch Norville, longtime supporters of the University, are providing a transformational gift of $2.5 million that will support student scholarships, endowed professorships and facilities in the college. The importance of endowed professorships cannot be overstated.
In 2012 the Norvilles supported the creation of an endowed chair named for Mitch’s father, Ernest R. Norville. This gift helped us recruit Hai Yao, one of the best bioengineers in the world. Less than two years later, Yao had secured an $11 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.
Endowed professorships allow us to recruit and retain top talent. This is perfectly illustrated by this month’s story of four CECAS faculty who received seed grant funding from the Health Sciences Center at Prisma Health. Three of the four are named professors.
Many thanks to the Norvilles for their Cornerstone Gift and the faith they’ve shown in our academic and research enterprises.
Anand Gramopadhye, Dean
