What is the Solar Maximum?
|
|
| 2024 has been a standout year for solar activity, with a total solar eclipse in April and a series of solar storms that brought the northern lights this summer.
Mike Nowak, Research Professor of Physics and Associate Director of the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences, was interviewed by KTVI for a story about recent solar activity.

On November 20th, the graduate students in the Department of Physics hosted their sixth annual Washington University Physics Research Symposium (WUPRS). As part of the event, a poster competition was held. The competition recognized the most outstanding posters and presentations, with awards given to the top presenters in each category. MCSS affiliated grad students Nathan Whitsett and Bryce Wedig tied for first place. Congrats to both of you!

WashU alum, Steve Hauck, PhD 2001, is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Case Western Reserve University.
Hauck was recently nominated for the American Geophysical Union's Volunteer Spotlight for his work as Chair of the AGU Advances EIC Search. He also gives his time to AGU through his role as Publications Committee Chair. Beyond AGU, Steve volunteers with the Mercury Exploration Assessment Group - a group dedicated to advancing the exploration of the planet Mercury and the people who aim to conduct that exploration.
Congratulations, Steve!
