Red-Hot Salary Trends at Law Firms
According to the recent 2023 Associate Salary Survey released by the National Association for Law Placement (NALP), the overall median first-year associate salary is $200,000, up $35,000 (or 21.2%) from 2021 when the survey was last administered. NALP’s Executive Director calls this a red-hot salary trend.
In the largest firms of 1000+ attorneys, the median first-year salary reached $215,000. In terms of geographic location, 11 cities have a median starting salary of $215,000: Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles/Orange County, New York City, San Diego, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and the Washington, DC area. Law students spending their summer at law firms can expect to make a median weekly salary of $3,550 in 2023, up from $3,075 in 2021 (or 13.4%).
