Reading/Literacy National Award

The Sam Houston State University Masters in Reading and Language Arts Program has been awarded the International Literacy Association National Recognition with Distinction for the Preparation of Literacy Professionals. This designation shows the program is aligned to the ILA Standards for the Preparation of Literacy Professionals and is leading the way to advance excellence and equity in literacy acquisition worldwide. This is the highest institutional honor awarded by ILA and demonstrates that the college's reading/literacy specialist program exceeds ILA’s high standards for excellence.

The award will be recognized in an upcoming issue of Literacy Today, and is valid through October 2028.

Verbal Aikido Workshops

From Conflict to Conversation

Enhance peaceful communication, conflict resolution, respecting all interactions, relationship building and a positive mindset.

Verbal Aikido mini-sessions (90-mins) are scheduled each morning and each afternoon the week of 11/13 – 11/16. VA is open to faculty, staff, and students. Sign up for one session or repeat for additional experience. VA mini-sessions are free to all, registration is required.

School Named for COE Alumn

Conroe ISD celebrated the dedication of Hines Elementary School, located in the Grand Oaks feeder zone. This campus opened in August 2023 and is named in honor of Dr. Chris Hines who retired as Deputy Superintendent of Conroe ISD in 2023 after serving 40 years in education. Dr. Hines is an alumn of the College of Education Educational Leadership doctoral program.

Dr. Landmark Receives Transition Award

Dr. Leena Landmark was awarded the PATRICIA L. SITLINGTON RESEARCH IN TRANSITION AWARD by the International Division on Career Development and Transition (DCDT). DCDT is an international professional educational organization affiliated with the International Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). The Patricia L. Sitlington Research in Transition award is presented to an individual who has contributed to more positive outcomes for transition-aged youth and to the field of transition through a body of research in transition. The award is named in honor of Patricia Sitlington, a DCDT past-president who contributed significantly to knowledge in the field through research.

Dr. Landmark also took second place in the sugar skull painting contest during the conference!

Dr. Young Receives ALER Award

Dr. Chase Young has been awarded the A.B. Herr Award from the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers. The award acknowledges Dr. Young's service, scholarly activities and his overall contribution to the profession throughout the years. The award will be presented to Dr. Young at the ALER Awards Ceremony on November 10.

Playful Teaching Blog Published by Anthology

Dr. Peggy Holzweiss's blog about playful teaching was published as part of her Catalyst award with Anthology. The purpose of the blog is to share playful teaching techniques. "I teach an online masters course in higher education finance in which students learn about budgets and spreadsheets, and students are often fearful of these topics. To reduce their stress, I turned the course into an imaginary world where students could creatively apply what they were learning." Holzweiss said.
