More than 15 years ago, Miki attended a seminar led by Terry Ryan in Japan and was impressed by how much the dogs in the seminar enjoyed clicker training. “I saw dogs with shining eyes and wagging tails,” she remembers. That seminar led Miki to explore positive-reinforcement training based on science. She found out quickly that what was called “science-based training” in Japan was not always accurately represented. When she attended courses and seminars in Japan that were advertised as science-based, Miki was often disappointed. “There were things that I questioned, especially what was taught about scientific understanding and ethics.”
