Dear Friends,
One of the most exciting tasks that the WINGS WorldQuest board and I take on is choosing our next group of Women of Discovery Award winners – the extraordinary women scientists and explorers who will ultimately join our international community of 84 Fellows.
We've spent months narrowing the list down to the top candidates. This is no easy feat, given the quality and courage of these women, all of them leaders in their fields doing groundbreaking work. They represent a wide variety of disciplines and countries spanning the globe, dedicating their lives to tackling the critical issues of our time, like climate change, wildlife conservation, space exploration and ocean health.
We are still finalizing our next group of awardees, but I can already tell you that it's going to be an impressive cohort. In the meantime, I hope you'll read on to learn about the most recent updates from current Fellows and Flag Carriers.

Gaelin Rosenwaks:
Coral Resilience in the Face of Climate Change

Scientist and filmmaker Gaelin Rosenwaks traveled to the Republic of Palau with a team of scientists studying how local coral reefs and algae are adapting to climate change. Rosenwaks is working on a film that she hopes will serve as a visual record of what the region looks like, as well as document the work scientists are doing to understand these environments.

Janey McGill:
Trekking Across Oman Offers an Opportunity to Challenge Cultural Stereotypes

In November, Janey McGill will lead a group of Anglo-Omani women and carry the WINGS flag across the Rub’ Al Khali, a desert in the Arabian Peninsula. The expedition is an effort to complete a physical journey, as well as an opportunity to address cultural and gender stereotypes.
We spoke to Janey to learn more about her upcoming journey.

What WINGS' Women of Discovery Are Up To

  • Rosaly Lopes, a volcanologist and a Senior Researcher at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, was recently awarded the 2018 Ambassador Award from the American Geophysical Union. The AGU is the largest community of Earth and space scientists.

  • Nalini Nadkarni, who was just inducted as a WINGS Fellow this year, made an appearance on the radio show Science Friday. She discusses the tools she’s invented to reach and explore the tree canopies, using fashion as a means of science communication and how she enlisted the help of prison inmates to farm moss. Listen to the episode here.

  • Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka won the Sierra Club's EarthCare Award, which recognizes unique contributions to international environmental protection and conservation. Dr. Kalema-Zikusoka founded Conservation Through Public Health, which promotes the co-existence of people and wildlife in Uganda.

  • In 2005, documentary photographer Michele Westmorland carried the WINGS flag while filming a documentary about artist Caroline Mytinger, who traveled to Melanesia in the 1920s to paint the locals. The film, Headhunt Revisited: With Brush, Canvas and Camera, was released this spring. >> Watch the trailer.

Laly Lichtenfeld Joins WINGS in Connecticut

Flag Carrier Laly Lichtenfeld spoke to WINGS supporters in Greenwich, Connecticut last month. Dr. Lichtenfeld is the founder of African People & Wildlife (APW), an environmental conservation organization in Tanzania. APW's Women’s Beekeeping Initiative works with 950 women, many of whom are part of the Maasai Tribe, to help them develop entrepreneurial skills.
1000 Girls, 1000 Futures
WINGS hosted our second webinar broadcast with the New York Academy of Sciences for participants of 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures, NYAS's virtual mentoring and skills development program for high school girls from around the world who are interested in STEM careers. WINGS Fellow Meg Lowman and Flag Carrier Becca Peixotto shared their ideas about science communications. Mentees and mentors joined in from the US, Canada, Greece, Denmark, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Malaysia and India.
