The Health Care for the Homeless Clinicians' Network will hold the second in a series of Community Conversations on Tuesday, March 29, at 1 p.m. ET / 12 p.m. CT / 11 a.m. MT / 10 a.m. PT / 9 a.m. AT / 8 a.m. HAT.
This Community Conversation will dive into the topic of harm reduction and methamphetamine, exploring how different communities are experiencing the surge in meth use. People who use meth while experiencing homelessness can experience significant harm directly related to lack of housing; staff that support these individuals also have limited tools for treatment, which can lead to moral distress while witnessing community members suffer. Join us as we share and support each other in this beautifully complicated work.
The HCH Clinicians’ Network launched Community Conversations in November 2021. Centered around pressing issues affecting providers (defined broadly) who serve people experiencing homelessness, Community Conversations are not webinars; they are discussions informed by real-life cases, meant to improve the well-being of HCH providers through mutual support and problem-solving. To facilitate a safer space, the conversations are not recorded.

CDC Foundation, NIMRC Award Nearly $1 Million in New Funding for Medical Respite Care
| |
In partnership with the CDC Foundation, the National Institute for Medical Respite Care (NIMRC) has awarded $953,000 and two years of technical assistance to five programs nationwide to integrate behavioral health services and medical care to unhoused people who are medically vulnerable. Over the next two years, programs will receive support in their efforts to improve health outcomes for people experiencing homelessness and, ultimately, to help them obtain permanent, stable housing.
Medical respite care is acute and post-acute care for people experiencing homelessness who are too sick or frail to recover from an illness or injury on the streets or in a shelter, but no longer require hospital-level care. This short-term residential care allows individuals experiencing homelessness the opportunity to rest, recover, and heal in a safe environment while accessing medical care and other supportive services.
The five recipient programs are:
- Bob Tavani House (Duluth, MN)
- Catholic Charities of Eastern Washington (Spokane, WA)
- HOPE Hospitality and Warming Center (Pontiac, MI)
- Joseph's Home and Mary's Home (Cleveland, OH)
- Madison Urban Ministry/Just Dane (Madison, WI)

| Submit a Youth Advisory Board Workshop for Our Consumer Leadership Summit, June 13-14, 2022
| |
On June 13 and 14, the National Health Care for the Homeless Council will host its first Consumer Leadership Summit in Nashville, TN. This working training will bring together individuals with the lived experience of homelessness, those supporting consumers in health center governance or advocacy, and people interested in developing consumer leadership at their health centers.
We will present resources and models from across the U.S. and work together to develop local action plans to improve consumer engagement and provide the groundwork for a consumer engagement evaluation tool.
This training will feature three working tracks: Consumer Leadership Development, Engaging Consumers in Governance, and Youth Advisory Boards. We are seeking submissions to present a workshop on our Youth Advisory Boards track. If you work on or with a Youth Advisory Board, or in generally engaging youth with the experience of homelessness in health care governance, please submit a workshop proposal by Friday March 25.

Register Now: Listening Sessions on Medicaid Enrollment Barriers
| |
CMS recently released a Request for Information (RFI) focused on Medicaid/CHIP enrollment in coverage, maintaining coverage, and access to services and support. To collect input from the HCH community and frame a comprehensive response, we are holding two listening sessions so we can hear directly from those at your program who are doing Medicaid enrollment work.
This is an opportunity for us to outline the specific issues that people experiencing homelessness often face when enrolling (or staying enrolled) in Medicaid, and to illustrate how CMS can hold states accountable to best practices. The conversation is for benefits managers, enrollment staff, CAB members, consumer leadership groups, and anyone involved in enrollment/redetermination of Medicaid.
We are hosting two sessions:
The sessions are one hour long, and you only need to attend one. Please register by clicking on the link for the session you would like to attend.
We also encourage others to submit their own comments to CMS if they wish. The deadline for responses to CMS is Monday, April 18.
