As Unitarian Universalists, we are inspired by many wisdom sources including Humanism, which “affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity.” During an election season and during times of trial and turmoil, how does placing our faith in humanity get tested and how can it remain strong?

A Message from Your Board of Trustees
| |
|
Your Board of Trustees strongly supports Rev. Miller.Â
She was recommended by our Ministerial Search Committee and affirmed by the congregation by a vote of 99%. In extremely trying circumstances, she has put love at the center and the health of the congregation in the forefront. We are lucky to have her.
Attempts to remove her from her position, and divide our congregation, will not succeed.
There is important work to be done including addressing our governance structure, which leaves too many congregants and church friends on the margins; providing a healthy and supportive workplace for our staff; and seeing to the financial health of our congregation.
Rev. Miller’s leadership is key to our efforts and success.

| NEW! — The Right Relations Formation Task Force Has Started Its Work
| |
|
Our Board of Trustees’ Governance Committee has begun work to create a Right Relations process within our community. The purpose of a “right relations” process is generally understood as a method to help a congregation practice faithful communication and creative conflict based on values of mutuality and consent.
The Governance Committee’s “Right Relations Formation Task Force” held its first meeting on Sunday, September 29. Governance Committee members Cathy Tortorici and John Bishop will serve on the Task force. John is the Governance Committee Chair and Cathy serves on the committee as a non-Board member volunteer. Congregant volunteers Jody Feldman, Kathy Ludlow, and Lauren MacNeill have agreed to join the Task Force to assist with their special expertise and experience.
The Task Force will develop a proposal for establishing a Right Relations Committee and the process such a committee would follow. After the Governance Committee reviews and approves their final proposal, it will be presented to the Board. The Task Force and Governance Committee will provide regular updates about this process in the coming weeks.

| UPDATE — Listening Circles Update
| |
|
We want to recognize everyone who has participated in the Listening Circles recently. We learned a great deal about what people are thinking and feeling and received many suggestions for how we might go forward in strengthening our Church together. You'll find the Executive Summary of these sessions here.
On Sunday, October 13, we will be holding the final two in-person circles (11:45 a.m. - 2 p.m.) and one more online circle (1 - 3 p.m.). Sign up here, indicating whether you want to attend in person or online.
We again ask that if you have already attended a Circle, please do not sign up so that others to have the opportunity to attend. If sign-ups exceed the space available, seats will be allotted based on the order in which people submitted their requests. You will be notified whether or not you receive a spot.
We would also like to offer the opportunity for you to request a "Listening Duo" with a Lay Minister to talk one-on-one about the three questions that were posed at the Circles and share your thoughts, feelings, and ideas for the future.

UPDATE — Still Here: A UU Vigil for Gaza
Sunday, October 6, 5 p.m. Location:Â Zoom
| |
|
As violence escalates further in the Middle East, the Unitarian Universalist Association justice ministry, Side With Love, invites us to lament, to stay present and to act for justice. Read their message here.
"Through a litany of loss, of outrage and resistance, we are still here. We honor the ongoing struggle for justice following the Solidarity with Palestinians Action of Immediate Witness, advocating for a ceasefire, release of hostages, humanitarian aid, and an end to military funding of genocide in Palestine and the world. Our UU Vigils for Gaza, open to all, are part of a series that invites us to grieve, learn, and hold space for one another."

The 100th Anniversary of Eliot Chapel:Â A Journey Through Time with the Organs of First Unitarian Church
Sunday, October 13, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. Location:Â Eliot Chapel
| |
|
A recital and discussion on the two organs that have graced our Eliot Chapel, with digressions on the original and current sanctuary instruments.
In 1924, it was realized that a new church would need new music so an organ was shipped from Estey Organ company in Brattleboro, Vermont, on August 7. Installation took two weeks. Two hundred new hymn books were donated and “Forward Through the Ages” was sung on November 16, 1924. Sixty years later the church supported ten choirs—including three bell choirs— all performing in Eliot Chapel. And by 1986 three children’s choirs were singing there too.

Letter from the Board: September 2024
| |
|
September brings the beginning of a new church year, a time to rededicate ourselves to each other and our community. As the Board looks to the year ahead, we are grateful for the Listening Circle sessions that have been so well attended and lovingly facilitated by our Lay Ministers and Board members. An additional session is in the works.
The conversation at the two sessions I’ve attended were heart-felt and reflected a range of viewpoints, reflections on our history, and hopes for our future. It’s also striking how similar they are to Board discussions...MORE

Fall is when I start working on windows and doors. We have over 300 doors here at First Unitarian. There are many kinds of doors: front doors, back doors, trap doors, sliding doors, double doors, stage doors, glass doors, and numerous more...MORE

Note on the 9/23 Attacks in Lebanon
| |
|
The blowing up of pagers and walkie talkies in Lebanon that killed 41 people and injured 30,000 has introduced a new method of terrorism into the world and all of us who use communication devices have become more fearful.
An attack on a potential enemy’s communication system is an act of war and we all wonder what the response of Hezbollah will be. Will this be the red line that is crossed on the path to a wide conflagration? As American citizens we are complicit in the war on Gaza and the war that may come and must do what we can to stop both the war in Gaza and a war that may come...MORE

CHECK WEEKLY — Art for Social Justice
Curated by Ethel, Speaking of Justice Editorial Team
| |
|
The Speaking of Justice Editorial Team offers weekly art to deepen our connection to the work for social justice and to build the Beloved Community.
Amanda Gorman, the 21-year-old inaugural Youth Poet Laureate of the United States of America, opened the 2019 Women in the World Summit with a stunning reading of her empowering poetry. Accompanying Gorman onstage was a troupe of dancers led by legendary choreographer Sherrie Silver, the mastermind behind Childish Gambino's award-winning music video "This Is America." Together, the two artists combined their talents to create a potent combination of words and movement. Watch the video below:

In the Community
Member Marlene Anderson died on September 16. Marlene joined our church in 2000 and was the founder of the Imani project that was part of our social justice program. It worked to support people living with AIDS in Kenya. Marlene’s family plans a celebration of her life at her home on October 5 from 2 - 4 p.m. We hold her and her family at this time.

Do you have a birth in the family, a graduation, an anniversary, a memorial, or other milestones to share?
You can acknowledge it to the entire congregation by sponsoring a floral bouquet. As we connect with friends, say it with flowers on the Chancel.

For the month of October we are sharing our plate with the Unitarian Universalist Association's Disaster Relief Fund. The scale of destruction in the wake of Hurricane Helene has been utterly devastating to many communities in the southeastern United States. Some Unitarian Universalist congregations have been seriously impacted and others are still trying to assess the damage. You can help support Unitarian Universalists and their communities as they recover from this storm by giving generously to the UUA’s Disaster Relief Fund.
