Building a New Generation of Prayer Leadership by
Re-rooting in Tradition

Tefillah leadership, real and vulnerable, is a multi-layered, nuanced art form, one that calls for training in liturgy and song as well as in listening—to the community, to the Divine, to our ancestral musical lineage. With this philosophy as a starting point, Hebrew College's new Certificate in Tefillah Leadership: Shabbat will approach prayer leadership as a creative practice, the sort of craft which leaders can develop and deepen by building their own understandings and methods. “How do we shape the next generation of tefillah leaders?” asks Rabbi Jessica Kate Meyer `14, Hebrew College Rosh Tefillah & Artist-in-Residence. “We want to be on the forefront, building a new musical language by re-rooting ourselves in tradition, asserting continuity with our ancestors.”

Just as we offer up our first fruits, recognizing that they were never ours alone to possess, so too with our joy. Our happiness was never meant to be for us alone. It was always meant to be shared. What we’re commanded here is to share in our joy, just as we share the first fruits.

Silvina Mizrahi: A Sephardic Spirit

Hebrew College's fall art exhibit, "Silvina Mizrahi: A Sephardic Spirit" premiered on Sunday, September 15 on our shared campus in Newton, MA. Guests heard remarks from Hebrew College President Sharon Cohen Anisfeld, Exhibit Curator and Hebrew College Trustee Deb Feinstein, and Silvina Mizrahi herself, and were treated to a tango performance and cuisine honoring the artist's Sephardic heritage.
