Hello, Gaucho parents & families!

This month's newsletter includes information about Commencement and Grad Fair details, the 2023-24 campus housing application for continuing students, resources for supporting your students this winter quarter, and more.

Reminders

The application for 2023-24 campus housing for continuing students opens on January 30, 2023 at 10:00am. The housing application will close on February 16 for priority consideration. Applying for housing is not a guarantee that students will receive a contract. Students should check their UCSB email account directly and frequently to avoid missing any important messages from UCSB.

Students who apply by February 16 will be considered on-time applicants for housing. All students applying after February 16 will be added to the late applicant list for consideration after new student application processes are concluded. The application and additional information can be found by visiting the UCSB Campus Housing website.

Winter Quarter Instruction Ends: March 17
Winter Quarter Final Exams: March 18-24

Commencement 2023 & Grad Fair

The 2023 Commencement schedule is now available. Students declaring degree candidacy in any of the four 2023 academic quarters are invited to participate in a ceremony based upon their major. Commencement reservations can be made in GOLD starting April 3 and close May 15, 2023.

Due to a large number of graduates, students are asked to limit their guest count to 6. Guests do not need to make reservations or obtain tickets. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. More information will be available on the Commencement website during Winter and Spring Quarter.

The Campus Store invites students and their families to the annual Grad Fair taking place March 1 & 2 in the University Center Lobby. Grad packs, invitations, cap and gown, announcements, class ring and graduation photos from UCSB's official Commencement photographer, GradImages, will all be available and on display. The Campus Store will provide regalia for portrait sittings and be on site to answer any questions. Visit the Campus Store website to learn more!

Resources of the Month

Campus Learning Assistance Service (CLAS)

Winter quarter can be a great opportunity for students to renew their commitment to their academic endeavors. First year and transfer students have now had a quarter or two of experience and may realize that their study skills, writing skills, etc. need some refining. Or, maybe this is your student’s first quarter taking a challenging pre-major or prerequisite course. Even upper division students may need test preparation or writing assistance for graduate school applications. Parents and family members can support student success by reminding their loved one of UCSB’s excellent tutorial services through CLAS.

CLAS offers: group tutorials connected to specific lower division math, science, economics, and statistics courses; drop-in tutoring for languages, writing, science, math, economics, and statistics; one-time study skills workshops; and academic skills consultations. Schedules can be found on the CLAS website.

CLAS services are paid for through student fees so there is no additional cost to utilize these resources.

Department of Recreation

Part of succeeding academically is living a balanced life with time spent studying and time spent recreating. Between the Recreation Center’s fitness equipment, two pools, and sports courts; Adventure Programs; intramural sports; and the department's fitness class offerings like yoga, group cycling, dance, sailing, and more, there really is something for everyone! The department is even hosting a women’s climbing night and a dodgeball tournament, among other offerings this quarter.

Please encourage your student to check out all of the opportunities available through Recreation. They’ll be glad they did!
