It's Here!

There aren't many emotions that outrank that particular "long anticipation coming to fruition" excitement. Whether it's a small, simple joy or a grand event, what can beat that buzz you feel when the thing longed for becomes the thing experienced? October always does that for me, and especially this October. October is simply a superior month. It's some of the best weather the South gets all year, accompanied by fantastic fishing. Football is getting into conference play along with international soccer and playoff baseball providing unforgettable moments and college basketball waiting just off stage. Candy corn and pumpkin spice abound (I rest on the promise that only God can judge me).

And this October? This October our youth suite kitchen is really taking shape, declining case numbers are making events easier, and our youth are excitedly digging into big topics in Bible study as we started our march through the Bible's overall story this past Sunday. They'll be without me on the 17th, however, as I will be away getting married! Youth events will continue that day, thanks to the great staff and volunteers with which we are blessed at PHUMC. Fall Retreat!

Sometimes, even when surrounded by happy exciting things, you just need a chance to breathe. That's why on October 11 we're headed to Roosevelt State Park for our Fall Retreat. The cost is $15, and you can register your student via our giving app or online giving portal. We'll meet at PHUMC at 10am, head to the park for some structured time together as well as chances to relax and explore nature before closing with dinner and heading back to church. Our goal for the retreat is make sure our students, surrounded by so many good but busy things, get a chance to be together and enjoy their day off before diving back in to the rest of the semester. If your student likes to fish, send them with gear because Geoff won't be passing on that opportunity during free time (Mississippi does not require a fishing license for those under 16). Parents, we're still looking for drivers/chaperones, so let Geoff know if you can help.

Wednesdays are back, and we hope our students will attend both youth-specific events and our churchwide fellowships!

Sunday
8:30am: Churchwide worship
9:30-10:30am Sunday School. Note this time change from early 2020. Staff, leadership, and teachers worked on this change to make sure we had a full hour, allow time for fellowship before the second worship service, and make sure worship and broadcast volunteers get in position in a timely manner.
10:45: Churchwide worship (this service is recorded/broadcast via the PHUMC Facebook page)
Sunday PM: Engage, our weekly chance to go beyond what can happen in the Sunday school hour, whether its fellowship, taking Bible study to the next level, service, and fun on or off campus. 5:30-7pm with dinner included unless otherwise not

Wednesdays: Our staff and leadership have been discussing the importance of giving our entire church family opportunities to reconnect after the ordeal of the last several months. With that in mind, we're spending the fall alternating between times to be together as a church family across ages and times for age group ministry. Youth ministry-specific events on Wednesday nights will be fellowship or service oriented. Some of these will be off campus, so either dinner will be included or we'll spedifically tell you to bring money for food. October's youth ministry events will be:

October 6: Churchwide Table Talk with brown bag dinner. This is our second time doing this; if you missed the first, you missed a great opportunity to get to know our congregation across age groups. There's something holy about 8 year olds and 80 year olds.

October 13: Serving our church by assisting with our children's ministry

October 20: TBA youth event

October 27: Churchwide Table Talk

Special Events

October 11: Fall Retreat at Roosevelt State Park

October 31: PHUMC Fall Fest. Come serve the littlest portion of our church family, then stick around for our own fun!

November 14: Youth Thanksgiving. By popular request, it's a youth group friendsgiving! (and hopefully taking of advantage of what will be our brand new kitchen!)

Keep an eye out for
-Service opportunities; many local organizations are scrambling to evaluate their needs and policies, so we hope to have some new chances to serve lined up soon.
-Summer 2021 big events. If you know your child has a significant commitment (band, working at a camp, etc.) please send that info to Geoff.

Everything AND the Kitchen Sink

No more trying to imagine where everything goes in our kitchen based on penciled outlines or me pointing! This past week the cabinets were installed, cabinet door styles selected, and measurements made for that installation.
