KNOW A STUDENT WHO WOULD MAKE A GREAT FUTURE BRAVE?

Brebeuf Jesuit has enrolled some of its most promising students with the help of our alumni, parents, and friends. Among applications received each year, some of the strongest come from those who are already familiar with all that Brebeuf has to offer, while others come due to our community sharing their experiences and encouraging those around them to explore Brebeuf.
To this end, if you know a promising student who would excel in our dynamic community, please encourage them to register for a Brave Day Shadow Visit, Attend our Open House on November 5, explore Brebeuf.org/admissions or contact Liz Otteson, Director of Admissions!

Faculty Spotlight

ms. michelle martin

How many years have you been at Brebeuf and in what capacities?
Twelve years as French teacher and Coordinator for the French exchange program at Brebeuf and thirteen years before that in the public school system.
What's your favorite thing about the role you play at Brebeuf?
My absolute favorite thing about my role at Brebeuf is that my position isn’t limiting.  By that I mean, Brebeuf gives me the opportunity to get to know and work with students in a variety of contexts: as a teacher and exchange program coordinator, through service work, mission trips and diversity dialogues, as their fan at sporting events, theater and musical performances, etc.  And without a doubt, the best part of my job at Brebeuf is being with the students.
What makes Brebeuf different from other area high schools?
That’s a great question and since I spent 13 years teaching in the public school system, I feel strongly about my response.  For me, Brebeuf is about finding God in all things. When you can find God in everything, you don’t see the division between you and the other. As such, you want equity and ultimately justice for others and you are willing to work for that.
Describe a memorable moment from your time at Brebeuf.
I can’t single out just one, but I can unequivocally state that my most memorable Brebeuf moments are the ones in which honest dialogues between people of different opinions and thoughts take place. Those are hard conversations to have. It takes courage to show your vulnerabilities to someone you don’t know well, but it is only through those discussionsones that take you out of your comfort zonethat you learn.
Brebeuf Jesuit is currently hosting French Exchange students right now (they are leaving us tomorrow).  Can you tell us more about the program and how it positively impacts both our school community and our host families?
We are entering into our 11th year of an exchange with Le Caousou Jesuit high school in Toulouse, France. The idea behind the exchange is to foster relationships between people in an effort to promote inter-cultural dialogue, tolerance, and respect for diversityall principles on which a Jesuit education is based. The majority of the families involved in the exchange still remain in contact and I think that is a testament to the friendships that have been formed.
If one of your friends was considering sending their child to Brebeuf, what would you tell them
That’s an easy one. I would say that if you truly want your children to be challenged to think critically and to take action with respect to issues of justice and equity, Brebeuf is a great place for that to happen.  But as a parent, you need to be prepared to allow your children to spread their wings and to allow them to fail from time to time because it is through that process that they will learn the most about others and about who they themselves are.  It is also in that process that your children will truly develop their God-given talents and gifts.
What's something that challenges you, and how do you navigate that challenge?
I struggle with saying no when I perceive a need somewhere and that can lead to me forgetting to enjoy each moment. When I notice that this has happened, I call on my mindfulness training to bring me back to the present moment so that when I am with my students, I am 100% there. It is then that I can be authentically me.
Who inspires you?
My sister inspires me. She has been through some incredibly difficult moments professionally and personally, yet she has not let that impact how she sees people. She is someone who goes out of her way to help other people when they are in distress, never questioning or judging them.  She is also an animal rescuershe has 15 disabled dogsand will not think twice about taking on another if the need arises. To top it all off, she doesn’t seek attention to all of the help that she provides because, as she says, “it isn’t about me."
What do you like to do in your spare time, when not working at Brebeuf?
I really enjoy volunteering with my son at  Dayspring family shelter, and baking or reading.  I love to bake for my students!
Tell us something about you that most people don’t know…
During my college years, I worked as a camp counselor teaching disabled children and adults how to white water raft and rock climb/repel.
Congratulations Seniors!
As of October 31, 2017 the College Counseling Office sent supporting documents for over 1600 applications in the United States and abroad!

Visit http://collegegoalsunday.org/ to learn more!
FAFSA
The FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid - is the form all colleges ask students to file to determine what kind of financial assistance a student might be eligible for. The FAFSA opened on October 1 at www.fafsa.gov and should be completed as soon as possible.  Families can start the process now by creating a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID - one for the student and one for a parent - at www.fafsa.gov. These IDs will remain the entire time the student is in college, so it’s important to keep track of them.
The National Center for College Costs works with students and parents to help them through the college financial aid process. Students in any grade level can find cost information for Indiana public and private colleges, figure out their Expected Family Contribution (EFC), and create a free Indiana College Costs Estimator report here.
The Indiana Commission for Higher Education is pleased to announce the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship. The scholarship provides 200 high-achieving high school and college students interested in pursuing a career in education the opportunity to earn a renewable scholarship of up to $7,500 each year for four academic years. In exchange, students agree to teach for five years at an eligible Indiana school. Students interested in applying must have a teacher complete a nomination form and upload the nomination form in their online application due by 11:59 p.m. EST on November 30, 2017.
Upcoming Events
On November 16, 2017 from 6:00-8:30 p.m., North Central High School is hosting a program to inform students and parents about the benefits of attending a Historically Black College & University (HBCU). There will be a college fair, a panel discussion, and a question and answer session. Please feel free to attend.
Special Programs
The Educate ME HBCU College Tour provides cultural and educational experiences that inspire students to examine personal interests during the college selection process. Students have a chance to walk through academic, residential, athletic and administrative buildings, and meet with faculty, financial aid counselors, and admissions representatives to learn more about each college’s admissions policies and deadlines. Senior Graduation Packets

Our Herff Jones representative recently collected all orders for graduation products from our seniors.  Unfortunately, we have a large number of seniors who did not turn in an order form. All seniors who did not turn in an order form were sent an email from Shani Simonson, Executive Assistant in the Principal’s Office this week.  Please check in with your senior to ensure they have submitted their order.
Please note: Even if you do not plan to order any of the additional items that Herff Jones offers (announcements, jewelry, etc.), a form must be turned in for each senior so that we can make sure that a cap and gown is ordered.
If you have any questions, please contact Shani Simonson at ssimonson@brebeuf.org.

Ignatian Teach-In for Justice and Crosses on Brebeuf's Front Lawn

As families drive onto the Brebeuf Jesuit campus November 3-6, they will notice memorial crosses on the lawn representing the Jesuit martyrs who died fighting political oppression during the Salvadoran Civil War. These Jesuits were faculty members and administrators at the University of Central America when they were martyred on November 16, 1989.
Brebeuf Jesuit will also honor Ignatian values by sending one of the largest high school delegations – a group of 25 students and teachers — to the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice event in Washington, D.C., where Jesuit educators and students will gather to discuss important issues of social reform.
Brebeuf community members are invited to a special prayer service in the Brebeuf Jesuit Chapel with our students and faculty Ignatian Teach-In representatives at 1:40 p.m. on Friday, November 3, before our representatives depart at 12:00 p.m. for Washington, D.C. Our representatives will return late Monday, November 6, after spending a day on Capitol Hill.
