My earliest broken heart happened when I found out beyond any denial that I was being cheated on…and that he loved her. I was being tolerated for what I could provide, security-wise. I earned the money and made the home but I was no longer the preferred lover. I couldn’t handle that reality.
Tender Heart is about coming to terms with an inescapable truth. The opening lyric is “When a tender heart breaks…” refers to a naive, trusting heart —not one hardened by experience and hard realities —getting stabbed in its deepest place. Another lyric, "And innocence is still a part… of your sore and tender heart…” — the innocence here is that invincible belief in the beauty and purity of love.

This song was written on tour in 2019. The words were first written as prose and later set to music. It was quick — maybe two hours on the words and an hour on the music. Each song takes a different process and some are harder. This one was easy.

Tender Heart came out of a personal struggle, but quickly evolved into a greater, more universal meaning. We as the human race are coming to realize realities we never dreamed we’d have to face: environmentally, culturally, financially, and health-wise. Humanity is coming to terms with uncomfortable, heartbreaking, terrifying truths.
This song is for the soul whose heart is blindsided by reality but is still soft and innocent. I hope people will identify with this song and feel they are not alone.
