A Message from Dean Sherry Glied

Dear Wagner Alumni,
As we take stock of Election Day and its implications, I appreciate that the Wagner community has continued to manage classes, projects, research, and work through it all. The University is offering many opportunities and designated spaces to engage in meaningful conversations, build essential skills, and reflect on important topics related to the election.
At Wagner, we are partnering with The Century Foundation for a virtual event, How Will the Election Impact Americans’ Health Care? This November 12 panel, featuring health care policy leaders, will discuss the opportunities and challenges presented by the outcome of the election. Learn more and register.
The University is carefully tracking the potential impacts of the election on our community, and we are committed to keeping you informed as we learn more about such changes and the University’s responses.
The election results will likely mean significant shifts across the range of US Federal policy. What they won’t change is the importance of Wagner’s mission. I am confident that Wagner’s alumni, students, staff, and faculty will continue to make sustainable improvements to the public good across all levels of government, in nonprofits, and through private social entrepreneurship, in the US and internationally. The values and skills we have always promoted and modeled—working collaboratively with others, focusing on the most vulnerable amongst us, respecting diverse perspectives, critically assessing evidence, and communicating clearly—remain critical today.
The nonpartisan work of Wagner community members to protect our democracy and get out the vote—which you can read more about here—showcases the important role we play.
Now, more than ever, I am so proud to be dean of a school committed to public service.
Here are this month’s happenings and highlights:
HighlightsOctober was full of community connections. The Henry Hart Rice Urban Policy Forum featured Vishaan Chakrabarti, founder and creative director of the Practice for Architecture and Urbanism, who delivered a thought-provoking presentation. Members of the Wagner community gathered at City Harvest, helping repack large bins of fresh fruits and vegetables to be distributed to New Yorkers experiencing hunger. And during NYU Alumni and Families Weekend, the EMPA program hosted a Toast & Tour, bringing together alumni for a tour of our new space.
Director of Academic Services and Faculty Engagement Michelle Spatz received the Professional Staff Award, recognizing her commitment to the Wagner community, at the 2024 NASPAA Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.
