JUNE VOLUNTEERING
Volunteer in a variety of ways!
Greetings, Volunteers!

June is here and so is the sunny weather! This month we have a range of volunteer opportunities, from getting out in the fresh air and gardening with Growing to Give, to sewing masks at home for Partners for World Health. We hope there's something for everyone.

We are always looking for new volunteer opportunities to feature. If you know of any organizations that are currently looking for volunteers, please don't hesitate to reach out!

As always, to sign up for an event this month and receive a month of free Garbage to Garden service, RSVP by email, and we will help answer any questions you may have. Remember, events are first-come, first-serve.

Happy Composting,

Partners for World Health
Partners for World Health collects medical supplies that healthcare facilities in the U.S. are required to discard and ship them to countries in need. In addition, they also organize medical missions to Southeast Asia and Africa for doctors, nurses, and students.
Currently, they are looking for volunteers to sew masks out of blue sterilization material for those on the front lines. They've already distributed over 5,000 masks, but need more! Volunteers are also needed to sew together pre cut gowns for local healthcare workers.

Growing to Give
Brunswick, ME
Growing to Give was founded in April 2017 by a group of 16 people who came together around the idea of growing organic vegetables using climate-friendly methods, and donating them to local people struggling with food insecurity through food pantries and other food access sites. They have a busy season coming up and need your help more than ever to ensure their fresh, organic veggies get to those who need them most. They currently have volunteer spots on Saturdays for farm work and seed starting. Gratefully, they are able to provide a volunteer opportunity in a beautiful setting where social distancing can be easily practiced!

Volunteers are asked to sign up in advance for two-hour shifts. They are staggering the comings and goings, keeping the work groups to no more than 10 people at a time, maintaining 6 feet or more between people at all times.  For more information please find their COVID-19 precautions outlined on their website.  To volunteer,  click here and submit the New Volunteer Application Form

First Baptist Church of Portland Food Pantry
The First Baptist Church of Portland food pantry serves hundreds of individuals each month by collaborating with local fresh food sources and distributing to families in need. They welcome all who come to serve our neighbors in the Greater Portland area! FBC is currently looking for volunteers who have a heart for ensuring people have enough food to eat and are available on Wednesdays to organize and distribute food and/or break down and clean up. They are operating a 'no contact' food pantry for the safety of volunteers and patrons. Volunteers would be able to practice social distancing and be safe and healthy.

Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program
Brunswick, ME
Hungry neighbors in our community need your help to feed their families! Mid Coast Hunger Prevention has a number of initiatives that work to address food insecurity and volunteers place a vital role in fulfilling their mission by preparing meals, distributing groceries, picking up donated food and a variety of other tasks.

This month, MCHPP could use volunteers to sort food donations in the mornings from 8:30-11:30 Monday through Saturday or prepare lunch from 8:45-1:00.
Volunteering with Preble Street
The mission of Preble Street is to provide accessible barrier-free services to empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger, and poverty, and to advocate for solutions to these problems.
Feed your hungry neighbors! Help serve any of 3 meals a day, 7 days a week at the Preble Street Resource Center Soup Kitchen. Volunteers assist with breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or at the weekly Thursday Food Pantry.
