While visiting Cuba last Summer I was struck by the beauty of the buildings and the city of Havana. They are representative of Cuba’s incredible history and it's Communist oppression. This collection of photos from Cuba shows the culture and beauty behind the people and the country with the deteriorated buildings and timeworn items. The Cubans I encountered were proud of their rich heritage and diverse culture that set them apart from Americans. The buildings themselves were ornate even through their crumbling exteriors. It was striking to see the more modern buildings next to ones that were so steeped in the history of Cuba’s past. Rolling down the streets it was common to see classic American cars from 50’s well before the Cold War.

Loves About Brebeuf
I love the opportunities to be involved and active around campus. From intramural basketball to film club to the Gender Sexuality Alliance, it is remarkably easy to find whatever you are passionate about and become a leader around the community. The robust community service program is also an awesome aspect of our school, that further gives students opportunities to grow and serve with others.
Favorite Class
Currently, I have been enjoying AP Government and AP Comparative Government with Mr. Kantz. My favorite class of all time has to be Honors English sophomore year with Ms. Parson.
Future Plans
I am still in the process of figuring out whether I will be at Ball State, Xavier, or the University of Dayton. I plan to study public relations, likely with a minor in political science.

Random Facts
I once started a fire by rubbing two sticks together.
I enjoy puns more than i’m willing to admit.
My favorite holiday is the Fourth of July.
I hate math with the burning passion of a thousand suns (Brebeuf teachers make it doable, however).
Any big Spring Break plans?
I have the awesome opportunity to travel down to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic with a couple of my friends and our families. I’m very excited!
What is your current favorite show or series on tv, Netflix, etc?
I am definitely a West Wing buff. I really like the Big Bang Theory and Burn Notice too.
If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you go and why?
Gold Coast, Australia. Australia as a whole seems like an amazing place to go, and while talking to one of my brother’s friends who grew up there, he told me that it was the hidden gem within the country. Secretly, though, my goal is to ride a kangaroo through the outback as calming didgeridoo plays in the background.
Congratulations on earning your Eagle!  What was the process of becoming an eagle scout like and what project did you complete?
Thank you! It was a long journey filled with undercooked pancakes made by scouts who can’t cook, and fun times around campfires. The journey culminated in my eagle scout project, where I had the opportunity to construct three portable bookshelves that helped to organize and expand the program night library for Brooke’s Place for Grieving Young People.
You are now in your final semester at Brebeuf Jesuit.  Has it sunk in yet?
Well, considering I still mess up the schedule all the time and have a lot going on, I would say it definitely hasn’t. I’m sure as senior week activities begin and I decide on a college, it will really begin to sink in.
In what way have you changed the most since your freshman year?
I’ve scored a lot more points in intramural basketball. A lot more turnovers, too. On a serious note, however, I think I have grown in my ability to view life through other perspectives, which has helped me to reach out to others in a more sincere and deep-rooted way.

Scholarship/Financial Aid News and Announcements
The backbone of all financial aid is the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) which opened on October 1 at www.fafsa.gov and should be completed as soon as possible for the 2018-19 year. Many schools also require completion of the CSS Profile CSS Profile, administered by the College Board, which asks more specific questions and accesses additional funds. The FAFSA is free; the CSS Profile has a small fee.
The VAST majority of scholarships (merit aid) are found within the individual college admission/financial aid websites and academic departments. Be on the lookout for additional essays, recommendations/nominations, and deadlines for these opportunities at the colleges to which you’ve applied.
Search for a specific scholarships in Naviance Family Connection in the “Scholarship List” under the Colleges tab. Sort by Scholarship name, Deadline, or Categories. Websites such as Scholarships.com and Fastweb.com are useful as well.

Brebeuf Jesuit's Spring Musical - The King and I

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I is a moving, radiant story of East meets West.
It is the early 1860s when newly widowed Anna Leonowens sets sail from her native England for Siam. Anna has taken a position as the schoolteacher for the children of the King of Siam. The King is determined to usher Siam into the modern world, and he thinks Western education can be a part of that. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by rulers of the West, and he takes Anna on as an advisor, asking her to help change his image. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King teach each other about understanding, respect, and love that can transcend the greatest of differences.
The King and I is full of beautiful music, traditional dance, and witty dialogue that has delighted audiences since 1951.

Student leaders from Brebeuf Jesuit recently presented at the Student Diversity Leadership Conference at Sycamore School. This annual conference is sponsored by the Indianapolis Diversity Consortium of Schools, which includes Brebuef, Cathedral, Park Tudor, University, Culver, Orchard, and Sycamore.
The presentation was titled “Community Disservice: Proper Approaches to Service and Community Engagement”. They captivated their audience with interactive discussions centering around the differences between charity and social justice, biases and privilege, and student ownership of community service experiences. Their presentation was well-received and inspired many students to act on the information that was conveyed.
Student presenters included Deijhah Scurry, Ana Mendoza, David House, Mary Claire Molloy, Shivam Bhargava, Sophie Ossip, and Madison Androne. Others assisting with planning and preparation, included Delia Novak, Julia Hiatt, and Katharine Melind. Let’s celebrate these students and their tremendous work in social justice.

The Brebeuf Food Drive Has Launched!

Brebeuf Jesuit is once again holding a canned food drive during Lent, February 14-March 29, 2018.
For years, our students, faculty, staff, and families have participated in this meaningful drive supporting St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry, donating enough cans of food to fill two semi-trucks! In addition, cash donations from our school community are able to buy tens of thousands of pounds of food each year.
Homeroom classrooms at Brebeuf will hold collections to once again to compete for the grand prize – a pizza party. To maximize our school’s impact, this year’s goal is for every student and staff member is to collect 20 cans each.
St. Vincent de Paul feeds roughly 3,300 families every week, or roughly 12,000 individuals, many of whom are children and the elderly. Every can is helpful!
How to Help
To contribute to the drive, send any canned food items to Brebeuf Jesuit with a Brebeuf student, who will deliver the items to their homeroom collection. To contribute monetarily (Make checks out to: St. Vincent de Paul, memo: Food Pantry), and bring donations of support to the Main Lobby Desk at Brebeuf Jesuit.
By coming together during this food drive, the entire Brebeuf Jesuit community can make an incredible difference in the lives of thousands in need here in Indianapolis! Let’s bring in those cans to your student’s homeroom and support St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry.
