Called in to Possibility

Carter Smith, Intern Minister

In a time of yet more uncertainty, how can we let the still, small voice of possibility speak to us? Carter will share about her own experience of being called to ministry and will offer practices for paying attention to that which calls to us.

Sunday's Order of Service

This Fall at First Unitarian
We have decided to change our plans for this fall.

Rather than return to in-person worship next month, as we had hoped, we will begin the new church year worshipping on-line only.
So many of us were looking forward to gathering once again in person, to returning to worship in the Sanctuary, singing together and feeling safe enough to be in one another’s physical presence. Speaking for myself, I was so looking forward to being able to see your faces when I preach.
Our plan had been to offer in-person worship beginning September 12, Homecoming...continued.

THIS SUNDAY! - Portland's "Clean and Safe" Contract: Info Session/Q&A with Housing Justice Advocates
Sunday, August 29 // 11:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Hosted by First Unitarian's Social Justice Program
This September, Portland City Council will vote on whether or not to renew the contract for the downtown Enhanced Service District  (ESD) called "Clean and Safe."  A coalition of housing justice, participatory democracy and advocates for the unhoused have been studying ESDs (often called Business Improvement Districts, or BIDs, in other cities) and their relationship with criminalizing homelessness. Programs like "Clean and Safe" are a main driver of anti-homeless ordinances in the country and are an often unexamined and huge factor in creating inescapable cycles of poverty.
In August 2020, the Portland City Auditor released a report, Enhanced Service Districts: City Provides Little Oversight of Privately Funded Public Services raising alarm about the lack of transparency and use of funds in this public-private partnership. Join us to learn about why and how we can make a difference.  For more information about Clean and Safe, read Business Improvement Districts Allow for Aggressive Policing of the Unhoused and A Controversial Private Cleaning and Security Nonprofit Is Supposed to Make Downtown Sparkle.
