TACHE Conference
The Department of Educational Leadership was well-represented at the recent Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE) conference held in San Antonio, TX., February 21-24. Dr. Gabriela Silvestre served as Conference Chair and during the conference, transitioned into her role as TACHE State President. HEDL doctoral student, Erica Castro, presented a session “Breaking Chains, Building Suenos”, Dr. Ricardo Montelongo presented a session “Chicano on the Camino de Santiago”. Anamaria Lopez & Maria D. Garcia presented a research poster “The Needs of Undocumented Students and the Availability of Support Services”. Eight doctoral students from our Higher Education Leadership program provided a panel session “Aprender y Crecer: The Journey Towards Doctorate Student Identity”. Two Higher Education Administration master’s students, Marcus Gutierrez and Daniela Mirabal, received full conference support from SHSU’s Division of Student Affairs to attend TACHE as first-time attendees. Drs. Cynthia Martinez-Garcia & Julie Combs attended the conference’s concluding event in support of TACHE new president, Dr. Silvestre. We are proud to represent SHSU at this event highlighting Latinx issues in higher education!

Dr. Marlon Gibson: Being the Catalyst for Community
The College of Education at Sam Houston State University was honored to host Dr. Marlon Gibson, who addressed students, faculty, and staff on February 28th, 2024. Attendees had the chance to engage with Dr. Gibson during the multiple breakout sessions.
The theme for the event was being the Catalyst for Community, which included topics of cultural competence and community building.
With over two decades of experience, he is a distinguished speaker and consultant renowned for his expertise. Dr. Gibson is currently Director of Community Engagement for Kappa Alpha Order. Within this position, he spearheads the creation and implementation of educational programs centered on aligning fraternal values, promoting diversity, and fostering inclusion.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in English creative writing, a master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Toledo, and most recently a doctorate in college student affairs administration from the University of Georgia.

Guest EditorBaburhan Uzum is going to serve as a lead guest editor in a special issue of International Journal of Qualitative Methods, a major Q1 venue in educational research with an 8.9 five-year impact factor. The special issue was launched this week and is titled "Research design and methods in telecollaboration for language learning and teaching: Affordances, challenges, and future directions”. In collaboration with colleagues at UTSA and in Turkey, the special issue will synthesize the qualitative research conducted around the world on virtual intercultural exchange initiatives.

Research RetreatThe Research Center is hosting a Research Retreat May 20th and 21st, 2024 (9am – 4pm) at The Woodlands Center. Attendees will receive:
Tips for writing and time management
Instruction for working with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and the Institutional Review Board
Help with forming effective collaborations
Tips for mentoring student research projects
Help with preparing impactful manuscripts
Time each day to work on your project
Lunch and snacks throughout the day
$500 for attending
All interested faculty will need to apply to be considered for this opportunity, and provide a description of the research project of focus at the retreat (this will need to be the project complete within 12 months of the retreat). Please include the following information (maximum of 1 page):
a brief overview of the research project;
impact of this project on your research agenda and your visibility as a researcher;
ongoing benefits to students and other stakeholders within SHSU and larger professional community;
timeline of the project;
anticipated deliverables such as submission to a scholarly journal, grant submission (and additional deliverables such as scholarly conference presentations);
specific targeted scholarly journals and/or grants.
Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on March 29th, 2024 and selected applicants will be notified by April 5th, 2024.

NTTBF Celebrates 10 Years with R.L Stine and Jeff Kinney and 75 other beloved authors for young readers coming in April to North Texas!
Co-founded by Dr. Rose Brock (Library Science) almost a decade ago, more than 50,000 kid readers and thousands of educators have journeyed to Irving, Texas to attend the North Texas Teen Book Festival.
NTTBF is again delighted to invite book people in the SHSU community to this year's 10th NTTBF and Educator Day in Irving, Texas on April 26 and 27. NTTBF will be hosting beloved children's authors, R.L. Stine (Goosebumps) and Jeff Kinney (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) at the free, all-day kid focused book festival, along with seventy-five other bestselling and beloved reader favorites ( view the complete lineup).
In addition to Saturday's public event, on Friday, April 26th, SHSU's Library Science program will be hosting Educator Day @ NTTBF in coordination with the educational regional service centers of North Texas (10 and 11). This free, all-day professional development is open to educators from across the state and beyond and will feature over 40 award-winning and beloved authors, including keynotes by literary icon and two-time Newbery winner Lois Lowry (The Giver) and Newbery winner, Jerry Craft (New Kid).
