It's Crunch Time! The 18th Annual De La Salle Cereal Drive starts September 24! Last year, we collected 2,650 boxes that went to the Contra Costa County Food Bank. This year our four classes will compete against each other! We are asking all students to bring a minimum of two boxes of cereal and to register them at the Parents Association Table in front of the bookstore, before school through October 12. The class with the greatest percentage of student donors WINS!

October 23, 2018

On Wednesday, Oct. 23, we will be celebrating De La Salle Giving Day. Every gift received will benefit every student, every day of the school year.

Our goal is simple: for 300 donors to make their annual gift to De La Salle on or before #DLSGivingDay, and to raise over $100,000 for the Annual Fund. Follow and share De La Salle High School on social media – Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter – to hear from Spartans past and present, and the lifelong impact De La Salle has had on them.

#Give2DLS - You can make your gift today, on #DLSGivingDay, or anytime in between. Consider making a gift in honor of the year of our founding, 1965:  $19.65, $196.50, $1,965, or even $19,650! All gifts are treasured. Through your support, you can give future De La Salle alumni a GREAT gift this year.

As we move into the 2018-19 school year, students, faculty, staff, and coaches will continue to receive education around the important Lasallian Principles, Inclusive Community and Respect for All Persons. A new webpage has been added to our website to help curate and promote the wonderful things our community is doing surrounding these initiatives.

In the middle of August, a mass emailing went out to ALL parents of De La Salle students containing the unique Parent Access Code for signing up for Schoology. This is where teachers post assignments, post course resources (like handouts, lecture notes, or presentations), and where some will ask to complete work online.
Schoology is particularly useful if a student has missed class due to absence. Schoology also contains a calendar with all of the student’s assignments and major projects/assessments across all courses. Faculty and students at both Carondelet and De La Salle utilize Schoology for their courses. If you did not receive an email with your Parent Access Code and instructions for signing up, please email Mr. Michael Aquino, Director of Educational Technology (aquinom@dlshs.org).

All incoming 9th graders and transfers were given access to and showed how to use the wide variety of technology tools during our Summer Boot Camp. All students who attended Boot Camp have access for the remainder of the semester to the Tech Boot Camp Schoology course where they can go back and revisit information they’ve forgotten. The Library staff is also available to assist with student technology access issues.

The Educational Technology Director maintains a webpage of Parent Technology Resources including resources for device tracking, helping your student maintain focus with devices/screen time, and opportunities for parent education.
Congratulations to the 438 De La Salle students that made the De La Salle Honor Roll for Semester 2 of the 2017-18 school year. High Honor is awarded for students earning a 3.75 GPA  or higher, and Honor is for students with a 3.50-3.74 GPA.
What if you could change the world — not just for today but also for generations to come?  Moms In Prayer (MIP) is a program where moms come together to pray, specifically and scripturally, for the lives of their children and their school.  We have a group exclusive to De La Salle and Carondelet that meets weekly at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Walnut Creek. Please join us for this powerful time of prayer and fellowship. Our first meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Evening meetings TBA for those who cannot attend the morning.
For more information, please contact Spartan mom, Teresa Drake (TeresaDrake7@gmail.com).

We want to thank all of you who attended the first Parent Association meeting last month.
We hope to see you on Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Library for our next meeting, when Dr. Heather Alumbaugh, Vice President for Academic Life will be the guest speaker.
We also want to thank all of you who attended and volunteered your time at the New Student/Parent Welcome and BBQ. It was a wonderful day for the nearly 750 people who were there!
Thank you for your continued support of the De La Salle Parent Association,
Cathy Avila

Thank you to all the families who have taken the time to register for P3 (eScrip, ScripSense and Amazon Smile).  You should have all received an invite from ScripSense last week.
We will also be available at Back-to-School Night at our table in the quad to set up times to review the process or answer any questions.
Make sure to take advantage of ScripSense's promotion before it runs out! Whether you need more school supplies, a trip to the movies, or a little shopping spree, ScripSense can help you with online shopping or egift cards!

After nearly 30 years of service to De La Salle High School, we offer a hearty thank you to Mr. Mike Otterstedt, Director of Guidance, and wish him well in his retirement!
We are thrilled to welcome Mrs. Lauren Stevens to our department. Mrs. Stevens worked for the last 10 years at DeMarillac Academy, a Lasallian school in San Francisco.

Freshmen students took an introductory tour of our offices during the first week of school. Sophomores received a presentation in their classes, and juniors and seniors are currently being called in to meet with counselors in small groups.

You can find more info about counselor assignments and services offered on our website at https://www.dlshs.org/campus-life/student-support.

Our Learning Center is back up and running, offering a variety of academic supports for our students. Find more information at https://www.dlshs.org/academic-life/learning-center.

De La Salle High School is pleased to re-introduce the Zum carpool service for De La Salle families. ZUM is a door-to-door service with drivers trained to ensure your children arrive at their destination safely and follow parent-provided instructions for hand-off.

A fun fact about Lasallian tradition
As the Christian Brothers community expanded, Saint John Baptist de La Salle asked his fellow Brothers to write to him every month with updates "on community relationships, their efforts in the classroom, their progress in praryer, and their fidelity to their community practices" (The Letters of John Baptist de La Salle). Consider this newsletter as one way we continue this communications tradition!
