The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is recognizing Georgia Tech alumnus and faculty member Tim Lieuwen with its most distinguished award: the ASME Medal.

He is the first person from Georgia Tech to receive the medal in its 105-year history. The honor is reserved for “eminently distinguished engineering achievement” — in Lieuwen’s case, for leadership in promoting clean energy and sustainable propulsion systems. He’s also being recognized for his contributions to policy and workforce development.

When scientists spot an asteroid whose trajectory might take it close to Earth, they monitor it frequently and calculate the probability that it might collide with our planet.

Aerospace engineering professor Karen Feigh cowrote a National Academies review of a national shortage that impacts 45,000 daily commercial flights.

Feigh and the 13-person committee found that the FAA hired only about two-thirds of the controllers it projected from 2013 to 2023. Due to attrition during that time — and because hiring didn’t accelerate until 2024 — 19 of the FAA’s largest facilities have 15% fewer people managing airspace than they need. 

A new mission strives to take black hole imaging to space. Scientists from the Georgia Institute of Technology, the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and 12 universities from around the world recently convened for a three-day workshop to plan the launch of the Space-based Precision Millimeter Interferometry Telescope (SPRITE) project. 

NASA’s PRIME-1 Mission landed on the moon in March. Two Georgia Tech alumna, Jackie Williams Quinn and Janine E.  Captain, led the PRIME-1 team for NASA. They had help with computer modeling of PRIME-1’s mass spectrometer data from Georgia Tech’s Regents’ Professor Thom Orlando and Senior Research Scientist Brant Jones in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
