QED-C Report: Opportunities for Quantum Computing Applications in Upstream Oil and Gas Production |
A new QED-C report, developed following a symposium with the Society of Petroleum Engineers, examines five promising use cases for quantum and hybrid quantum-classical computing across seismic imaging, modeling and simulation, and production optimization. The report looks beyond technical potential to consider the real-world benchmarks, data, integration requirements, and industry adoption pathways that will determine whether quantum approaches can deliver value alongside high-performance computing. It also outlines four recommendations for industry, government, and technology stakeholders to help move the most promising applications from research toward practical evaluation. For QED-C members working across quantum computing, energy, or enabling technologies, the report offers a focused look at where opportunities may emerge and what needs to happen next.

NSF Agency Information Collection Activities: Comment Request; National Science Foundation Proposal/Award Information-NSF Guidance on Financial Assistance (Updating the PAPPG) |
The NSF has issued a Comment Request on a proposal to update NSF policies through the development of the U.S. NSF Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG), now to be renamed the NSF Guidance on Financial Assistance (GFA). The GFA would formalize some of the Office of Management and Budget's proposed changes to Uniform Guidance, including the ability of the agency to terminate or suspend grants at will and disallow previously allowable publication costs. The GFA is also structured entirely differently from the existing PAPPG; Read the GFA PDF.
Deadline for submitting an individual response to NSF: Anyone who is interested in responding directly to NSF as an individual may do so by submitting comments electronically on the government's regulations webpage by August 24, 2026. Individuals submitting responses should not submit on behalf of the institution.

U.S. Department of Energy Launches the Genesis Open Models Initiative |
DOE recently announced the Genesis Mission US Open Models Initiative to produce a new class of open-weight foundation models designed specifically to accelerate scientific discovery as part of DOE’s broader Genesis Mission. The Initiative is requesting input from potential contributors interested in contributing models and data, co-developing evaluations and benchmarks, or collaborating on fine-tuning and application deployments.
Applications for fine-training efforts close on August 25, 2026. Additional deadlines will be rolling and are expected every three months.

We are delighted to announce a call for proposals for the 2027 Discovery Prize, sponsored by the Stony Brook Foundation. This $200,000 prize will be awarded to a scholar in the STEM disciplines whose research project embraces risk and innovation—two cornerstones of scientific advancement.
Eligibility: An individual must be an early career faculty member who, at the time of application, has a tenure-track or non-tenure-track assistant professor level–appointment, or is no more than five years beyond tenure and promotion at the associate professor level at Stony Brook University (SBU). The proposed research project may emerge from a single discipline or may be interdisciplinary, involving multiple SBU faculty. The lead PI, however, must fit the eligibility criteria described above. The proposed work must be basic research that is discovery-driven, creates new knowledge, and has the potential for broad impact on society or the Stony Brook University community. Research that is primarily translational in nature (i.e., seeks to apply existing knowledge) or that has been funded in the past is not eligible.
Deadline: Concept papers due September 9, 2026, at 11:59 pm EST via the Discovery Prize Portal in Infoready.

2026-2027 Faculty Call for Proposals for the SUNY AI Platform Research Awards |
This Call for Proposals invites researchers to submit a proposal for innovative research projects that leverage the SUNY AI Platform, a secure, enterprise-grade AI environment powered by Google Cloud. The goal of this initiative is to accelerate research and innovation across all disciplines by providing access to cutting-edge AI tools, infrastructure, and expert support.
Eligibility: Principal Investigators must be faculty or research staff from a doctoral-granting SUNY campus. Collaborators from any SUNY campus are welcome. Disciplines: Researchers from all disciplines—from engineering and the sciences to business and the humanities—are encouraged to apply. Awards: Up to $50,000 in platform resources per project.

Description: The EDU Core Research (ECR) program offers this ECR:Core solicitation and invites proposals for fundamental research (curiosity-driven basic research and use-inspired basic research) that contributes to the general, explanatory knowledge that underlies STEM education in one or more of the three broadly conceived Research Areas: (1) Research on STEM Learning and Learning Environments, (2) Research on Broadening Participation in STEM fields, and (3) Research on STEM Workforce Development.

Description: This is a two-year pilot program to help faculty adopt team science structures with the goal of amplifying impact, accelerating science, and solving big challenges. The vision is to build a national network of early- and mid-career leaders who are proficient in team science. It will support interdisciplinary teams of scientists pursuing high-risk, high-reward basic research across the physical sciences and their adjacent fields and subdisciplines.
Institutional Limit: No limit
PI Eligibility: An individual may not be on more than one team. Once an LOI has been submitted, the team cannot change PIs or Co-PIs prior to submitting a final proposal. Each team member (PI and co-PIs) must: (1) Hold a full-time, independent position such as an academic appointment or equivalent scientist track at a national laboratory or nonacademic research institute. Individuals do not need to be in a tenure-track position; however, they may not be in hierarchical relationships with other team members (e.g., a research professor on the same team as a faculty member who oversees their laboratory). (2) Work at a U.S. or Canadian institution of higher education, national laboratory, or appropriate research institute, where they have access to the resources and facilities necessary to conduct their component of the proposed project; (3) Have started their first full-time, independent position within 10 years of the Letter of Intent (LOI) submission. Teams as a whole must represent an interdisciplinary collection of three to five scientists, where each team member contributes a specific and essential expertise required for project success. Team members can be employed at any university, public or private, in the U.S. or Canada.
Award: $1,000,000 over 2 years
