| Responding to Students in Distress |
Students will often share with professors about their mental health, sometimes making statements that are confusing at best and alarming at worse. As a professor, you may be concerned about how to respond. Through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the Dean of Students Office, the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) and the Great Minds Dare to Care initiative, there are numerous resources to support faculty to navigate these situations. Here are just a few:
|
CAPS and the Dean of Students Office/BIT are available to attend any department or faculty meeting to share more information and provide additional support.

Newest Episode of
Zet Forward: Toward an Anti-Capitalist Composition with James Daniel
James Daniel, Ph.D., assistant professor of English and director of basic writing and assessment in the Department of English, recently appeared on episode 7 of our
Zet Forward podcast where he spoke with Gerard Shea about his research and 2022 book,
Toward an Anti-capitalist Composition (Utah State University Press). Daniel emphasized that the writing classroom can "valuably explore issues of precarity, economic inequality, and workers’ rights." He also challenged the field of composition to explore its history and recognize the negative effect capitalism has had on the body of work, while re-imagining it as a discipline. Explore the Modern Meaning of Being “Live” in Theatre
Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of English, Donovan Sherman furthers the arts conversation around live theater and related intellectual thought. As anthology editor of the 2023 book,
Early Modern Liveness from Bloomsbury Press, Professor Sherman explores what it meant for early modern theatre to be 'live', and how over time, experiences of live theater have changed. The recent expansive collection includes theater works from the 16th and 17th centuries onward. More broadly, Professor Sherman's research focuses on early modern drama, primarily Shakespeare, and he expresses curiosity about how performance at that time could include spiritual and philosophical work. His earlier book,
The Philosopher’s Toothache: Embodied Stoicism in Early Modern English Drama (Northwestern, 2021), explored Stoic philosophy in Shakespeare's day as a practice versus doctrine.
