Tufts MLK Celebration 2020

Wednesday, January 22, 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Breed Memorial Hall
Every year, Tufts University hosts a celebration to honor the life and mission of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We recommit annually to King’s vision for an equitable world by hearing from those who live the values of justice. This year’s program begins with current Tufts students sharing research and writing about their own family histories. After a light dinner, Tufts welcomes Dr. Seth Markle, A00, Hope Wollensack, A11, and Desmond Fonseca, A20 for a panel discussion on this year’s theme: "On the Right Side of the World Revolution: Local Movements and Global Visions."

“I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism and militarism are incapable of being conquered.”
– Martin Luther King, Jr. “Beyond Vietnam,” Riverside Church, NYC, April 4, 1967
Outline of the Day:
4:00  Welcome remarks, University Chaplain ad interim Jennifer Howe Peace and President Anthony Monaco
4:15  Student sharing of family histories
5:00  Light dinner (vegetarian, kosher, and vegan options available)
5:30  Panel discussion – "On the Right Side of the World Revolution: Local Movements and Global Visions," with:
- Dr. Seth Markle, A00
- Hope Wollensack, A11
- Desmond Fonseca, A20

Trans Day of Remembrance Exhibit Moving to Tisch Library
Spring 2020

SMFA at Tufts artist Kim Tran, class of 2023, created a video documenting and reflecting on their work for the 2019 Transgender Day of Remembrance art project. The project celebrates the lives of trans individuals and mourns their loss due to anti-transgender violence. The Transgender Day of Remembrance is supported annually by the Tufts Chaplaincy, the LGBT Center, the SMFA, the Department of Theater, Drama, and Dance, and the Vice Provost's Office.  The 2019 exhibit will move to Medford at the Tower Gallery in Tisch Library on February 17 and will be on display through March 13

Last year, 2019, marked the 20th anniversary of Trans Day of Remembrance. Founded in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, a trans woman, to memorialize the murder of trans woman Rita Hester from Allston, Massachusetts and draw attention to the continued violence and transantagonism experienced by trans and nonbinary communities. TDoR has evolved into an international day of action observed in over 185 cities in 20 countries.
Come experience the work created to remember the lives lost and lift up trans and nonbinary narratives. Click below to to hear Kim describe the process of creating their project.
