| Apply to Participate in a new STAR Net and HHMI Tangled Bank Studios Collaboration: Flight Path!
With more than one billion birds killed by window strikes each year in the United States alone, STAR Net and HHMI Tangled Bank Studios aim to create a national outreach campaign that taps into the popularity of bird watching and provides local communities with simple and fun activities to get to know their local birds and promote bird health and safety. Inspired by HHMI Tangled Bank Studios’ award-winning series Wild Hope, which highlights conservation changemakers from around the globe and features two films that shine a light on efforts to protect birds from window strikes and prevent them from getting confused by city lights when they migrate, Flight Path invites you to swoop into a robust suite of materials to create engaging and educational events that give your communities the opportunity to learn about bird migration and local and regional birds, and to become local science explorers themselves.
Pre-Application Webinar An optional pre-application webinar where we will discuss the application and answer any questions will be held on May 21st, 2025 at 2pm PT/3pm MT/4pm CT/5pm ET.

Explore the Wonders of Space with ViewSpace’s NEW Interactive Image Tours!
NASA’s Universe of Learning Program team is excited to announce the release of a new free digital learning resource for libraries and other lifelong learning venues – ViewSpace’s interactive Image Tours! ViewSpace’s Image Tours offer a dynamic way for library visitors of all ages to explore NASA’s breathtaking space telescope images, learn about science, and get excited about our universe! Users can pan, zoom, and dive into key points of interest with overlays, contextual details, and videos that tell the story behind each image. We’ve designed Image Tours so they can be used as interactive kiosks, discovery stations, or in facilitator-led programs – bringing astronomy to life in captivating, hands-on ways. You can easily set up an exhibit using our free Image Tours app, which transforms any tablet into an interactive display. Image Tours also complement ViewSpace’s growing collection of Interactive Image Sliders and astronomy-themed videos. Whether used on their own or alongside other resources, the Image Tours offer a self-guided way to explore concepts seen in ViewSpace’s videos, helping learners make even deeper connections. They also provide valuable context for images users may not have encountered before, enriching their overall understanding of space science.

FLIGHT PATH, the first campaign in the Spark of Science@ My Library initiative, focused on the science of birds and bird migration. Free films – including two episodes from HHMI Tangled Bank Studios’ award-winning Wild Hope series, activities and educational resources will raise awareness about bird migration and offer suggestions for how communities can observe and protect birds during peak migration periods by doing things such as turning off lights and marking windows to prevent bird strikes.

| The Quest for the NASA Moon Trees
by Luna Dara Kelondra
Did you know that trees have been into space? They have! Well, not exactly trees, but tree seeds. Back in January of 1971, the Apollo 14 Mission astronauts took somewhere between 200 and 2500 tree seeds with them into space, and all the way to the Moon. Those seeds orbited the Moon 34 times with Stuart Roosa in the command module, named Kitty Hawk, while Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell did experiments in the Fra Mauro region of the Moon.
