Quincy Media's WPTA (Channel 21, Fort Wayne) runs two of the 'big four' affiliates: ABC on their .1 and NBC on their .2. Local news reporters appear on both local newscasts "ABC21" and "Fort Wayne's NBC." They recently hired Arielle Cadet, a graduate of the University of Missouri. The University of Missouri runs an NBC affiliate: KOMU-TV, serving both Columbia and Jefferson City, Missouri. There, Ms. Cadet worked as a student and after graduation as a part time reporter.

Federated Media's Rock/WRBR (103.9fm, South Bend) PD/midday host Ron Stryker died. In 1988, Mr. Stryker (born John Michel, II) began his broadcasting career in Minnesota, and joined Federated about a decade ago. His other broadcasting stops include Arizona, California, and Minnesota. Mr. Stryker also served as PA (public announcer) voice for Notre Dame Men's Basketball. Funeral services were held over the weekend. He was only 51. WRBR remembered him on their webpage, and the Jason Lee and Kluk morning show posted their complete (scoped) morning show from last Thursday. Cumulus' Country/WWKI (100.5fm, Kokomo) broadcaster Bill Tandy dies. Bill Tandy co-hosted the "Male Call" show. If you have a memory of Mr. Tandy, please send me an e-mail.

Correction: Last week, The Bob and Tom Show, based at iHeart's Classic Rock/WFBQ (94.7fm, Indianapolis) added a new Chicago affiliate. WKQX-HD2 (101.1fm-HD2) began airing the show from 5am until 10am, Central Time.
Over the weekend, the Carmel Clay Historical Society opened an exhibit "Rock' On: The History of Carmel High School's WHJE and CHTV Stations" at the Monon Depot Museum. Here's more information from the hyper local publication You Are Current.

A former broadcaster with White River Broadcasting's WWWY (106.1fm, North Vernon) died yesterday. Jimmy Foxx (James Davidson) did mornings at WWWY after they flipped to a Rock format in late June 2004. It's now a Classic Hits station ("106.1 The River"). This Week in Indiana Radio History
Sign-on dates seem to be a prickly matter, subject to great debate, and mostly impossible to confirm. If there's something we need to add to the "calendar," please let us know. Please e-mail us if you have updated information.
September 15: In 1966, 95.9fm, Michigan City signs on as WMCB-FM. Today, it's WEFM. In 1992, WKDQ (99.5fm, Henderson, Kentucky) flipped formats to Country. In 2009, at 6:00PM, WKLU-FM (101.9fm, Brownsburg) signs off as an oldies station, owned by Russ Oasis. After purchasing WKLU, Educational Media Foundation took over the frequency at that point, and still runs their contemporary Christian "K-Love" format.
September 16: In 2000, then-WEXI (102.9fm, Huntington) dropped their simulcast of then-sister Rock/WXKE (103.9fm, Fort Wayne) and flipped formats to dance and club music, as "Energy 102.9."
September 17: In 1962, 88.9fm, Notre Dame signs on as WSND-FM, and still is.
September 18: In 2001, David Hicks died. Age 62. Mr. Hicks was CEO of Hicks Broadcasting, which owned three Michigan radio stations (WKMI, WKFR, WRKR) and WRBR-FM (103.9fm, South Bend).
September 19: In 1988, 104.3fm, Casey, Illinois signs on as WCBH-FM, and still is. In 2011, WDND (1620am, South Bend) flips format from ESPN Radio to a simulcast of sister station CHR/WNDV (92.9fm, South Bend).
September 21: In 1995, then-WKQM (96.3fm, Churubusco) flipped formats from easy listening ("WKQM The Soft Sounds of the City") to alternative music, as "96.3 The Edge". Hear the sign-on, after the end of their stunt TV theme songs format. In 2000, 102.9fm in Edinburgh signs on as WYGB. It later moved to 100.3fm, but remains WYGB. In 2005, 95.9fm in Franklin flips format from Christian AC/WIJY ("Joy 96") to Oldies/WIAU as "Gold 95.9" (What's the chemical symbol for gold? AU.) In 2009, WGBJ (102.3fm, Auburn) flipped formats at 6:00PM from Regional Mexican to CHR as "Power 102.3" (here's a small audio clip from October 2009).

WICR Radio at the University of Indianapolis is accepting applications for a Director of Engineering. This is a full-time, exempt staff position. The Director of Engineering (DOE) oversees the technical operations of WICR-FM, its HD channels, and Internet streams. The position holder is also the Designated Chief Operator for WICR Radio according to the requirements of the Federal Communications Commission and, as such, is responsible for ensuring the station complies with applicable FCC rules and regulations. The DOE is responsible for developing short and long-term facility plans, recruiting and teaching a student staff, facilitating equipment maintenance, and providing technical support, as needed, for television and the communication department.
Three years of broadcast engineering or related experience is required. This includes experience with and knowledge of FCC Rules and Regulations as they pertain to licensing and operating a full-power FM/HD radio station, radio frequency transmission and reception systems; and computer networks, operating, and digital audio systems. Experience teaching/training/managing staff members on the proper operation of radio studio and transmission equipment is also required. Candidates must have obtained a bachelor's degree in communication, telecommunications, media or a related field.
