Letter from Our CEO Bobby Watts: The Power of Bearing Two Faces
It is commonly said that January is named after the Roman god Janus, who has two faces—one facing forward, and one backwards—and is associated with transitions such as beginnings and endings. As we move into 2018, many of us have engaged in the familiar and important exercise of looking back at the previous year, taking stock of what went well, what didn’t, and applying that information in a forward-facing manner in order to do better in the coming year. The lessons learned from the past can often provide a powerful springboard into a new future... Read the full letter.

HCH2018 Consumer Subsidy Applications Are Open
Seeking to engage consumers in all aspects of our work, the Council is offering a limited number of consumer subsidies toward the cost of attending our 2018 National HCH Conference. If you have previously or are now experiencing homelessness and have used services at a Health Care for the Homeless program, please consider applying for a subsidy: these funds will help cover your registration, lodging, a meal stipend, and partial travel expenses. When consumers attend HCH2018, they will learn, network, and build leadership skills to make their voices heard throughout HCH. Apply by Feb. 23 to secure a spot for yourself, or share this opportunity with a consumer you know! Email Katherine Cavanaugh, Consumer Advocate, or call at (443) 703-1320 with any questions.
Exhibit at or Sponsor HCH2018
Gain brand exposure, generate leads, and make relationships with our community by engaging in our sponsorship and marketing opportunities at HCH2018. The Council’s National HCH Conference is the preeminent annual gathering of health center leaders, clinicians, and others serving people without homes. Our 2018 HCH Expo promises enhanced foot traffic through incentives such as exhibitor bingo with prizes, and the event will feature creative marketing opportunities such as sponsoring our opening reception, Wi-Fi, coffee breaks, tote bags, and more. View our prospectus, apply now, or contact Alyssa Curtis, Training Manager, with any questions. Exhibitors must apply by April 24 to receive promotion in our printed program; late applicants will receive digital promotion only.
Nominations Open for Council Awards and Steering Committees
The Council is seeking nominations for worthy individuals to be honored at our 2018 National HCH Conference, as well as for members to join the Steering Committees of our membership groups. If you know someone who would qualify for one of the four awards to be presented at HCH2018—such as our Philip W. Brickner National Leadership Award or Karen Rotondo Award for Outstanding Service—please submit a nomination. You can also nominate yourself or a colleague to become a Steering Committee member for the Council’s HCH Clinicians’ Network, National Consumer Advisory Board, or Respite Care Providers’ Network; terms begin July 1. Nominations are due Feb. 23.
Health Center Funding Update: Not Quite There Yet—Take Action!
Funding for Community Health Centers expired on Sept. 30, 2017. Before ending the 2017 session Congress passed a very short-term reauthorization to fund the program through March. While this is an accomplishment (thanks to your advocacy!), we still need a long-term fix to save 2,800 Health Center locations, more than 50,000 jobs, and most importantly, care for some 9 million patients. Take action by sending an email or tweet your Congressperson about the importance of implementing a long-term fix immediately: this tool from our partners at NACHC does all the work for you, and the Council has also created HCH-specific talking points to bolster your message. Email Regina Reed (or call at 443-703-1337) to set up a quick call with a staff member in your Congressperson’s office to share your concerns: we will set something up that works with your schedule and gladly join you on the call.
APHA Caucus on Homelessness Calls for Abstracts and Reviewers Still Open
There is still time to submit an abstract to the American Public Health Association for the APHA 2018 Annual Meeting & Expo. The meeting’s theme is “Creating the Healthiest Nation: Health Equity Now.” The Caucus on Homelessness looks forward to highlighting issues related to the theme as well as broader issues related to this framework in the context of the vulnerable and marginalized groups we work with. Find suggested topics and details for submitting to the Caucus on Homelessness, and submit an abstract by Feb. 22, 2018. The Caucus is also seeking abstract reviewers: interested individuals may submit applications including their name, affiliation, email, and area(s) of expertise. Selected reviewers will be contacted with instructions in late February; all reviewer applications are due by Jan. 31. Please email Program Planner Brett Poe or call at (615) 226-2292 with any questions.
