Members Learn About Exciting New Initiatives

It was a full house at the October Women’s Leadership Network’s Conversations with Women Who Make a Difference event.

Members gathered to learn about the work of United Way of the Capital Region’s Health, Education and Income community task forces from a panel of three task force members: Barbara Terry, co-chair of the Health Task Force; Cindy Mortzfeldt, co-chair of the Education Task Force; and Cyndi Tolsma, member of the Income Task Force.

Ladies who attended the October Conversations event were one of the first groups to learn about the research, solutions and pilot projects around the following issues:
  • Lack of access to health care
  • Disparities in school readiness and school achievement
  • Children and families living in poverty
Check out www.uwcr.org in the near future to learn more about these pilot projects!
WLN Members Volunteer in the Community

This Thanksgiving, United Way of the Capital Region’s Women’s Leadership Network (WLN) members made the holidays a little brighter for local families in need.

WLN volunteers gathered at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, along with Chef Michael Harants, to prepare side dishes for a Thanksgiving meal for residents and staff at Catholic Charities Interfaith Shelter.

A second group of WLN members helped New Hope Ministries with their annual Thanksgiving food distribution. Volunteers helped families shop for and load all of the necessities to prepare a Thanksgiving meal. According to New Hope Ministries, more than 425 families were served that day!

These family-friendly projects were a fantastic way for WLN members to share with their families the joy of giving back. Thank you to all who participated!

Make a Difference on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

United Way of the Capital Region’s Women’s Leadership Network (WLN) members are invited to join us for Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Day of Service on Monday, January 16, 2017.

Members had such a great time volunteering at Camp Curtain Academy during our last MLK Day of Service that we have decided to return in 2017. This year projects will include organizing the library or resource room, and doing touch-up painting in areas of the building.

We’ll also have a project at SciTech High School. Volunteers will help create seating and back-drops for a performance café.

Children are welcome to volunteer with their parent/guardian. Check each project description for specific age requirements.
