Dear friends and colleagues,
Hundreds of individuals and groups have leapt into action to help New Orleans low-wage tourism workers, musicians, artists, gig workers, retail workers, and others who've suddenly lost their livelihoods as a result of the COVID-19 shutdown. Grassroots and organized efforts are springing up all over town.
Today, The Data Center releases the most up-to-date data on low-wage workers by neighborhood. For each neighborhood, you can see the number of workers who earned $1,250 per month or less. In 2017, fully 22 percent of the 138,000 workers living in New Orleans earned $1,250 per month or less—roughly a full-time minimum wage job.
You can also see the share of workers in your neighborhood by industry, such as retail or accommodation and food service. And we have poverty rates for each neighborhood, as well as the share of households without access to vehicles.
