Hi Friend of the CTE,
The summer heat has arrived, and the CTE is here to keep you cool and connected to all your teaching and learning needs. You can still submit a poster proposal for the Lilly Conference (and apply for a scholarship to attend for free). Mark your calendar for early fall CTE programming, and engage resources to support your summer teaching or fall course planning.

Generative AI for Teaching: A Hands-on Intro |
12:30 pm - 4:30 pm (includes lunch), 320 Laws Hall (limit 25 people)
|
Registration deadline: 12:00 pm Friday, August 15 |
In response to high demand and excellent reviews, we’re excited to offer this workshop again. New (or relatively new) AI users will engage strategies to facilitate their work as teachers and investigate useful strategies for supporting students’ learning, including guided, discipline-specific, and personalized exploration and experimentation with GenAI in this hands-on, in-person workshop. Here’s what past participants had to say:
“I think this seminar was spot-on—flow was good, the breaks/pauses were strategic, and the dialogue was helpful.”
“The practical knowledge of how to create powerful prompts plus the thoughtfulness of when and how to use [Gen AI] in the classroom….”

We received many fine proposal submissions for the 44th Original Lilly Conference on College Teaching (November 20-22 at Armstrong Student Center), and the program is shaping up to be excellent. The good news is that you can still be on the program—spots for the conference poster session remain open. If you’ve never submitted a Lilly proposal before, check out this video for helpful support. Proposal submissions will close when the poster session is full, so submit yours soon!

A Values-Based Approach to GenAI |
This Faculty Focus article encourages instructors to create GenAI-based instruction that aligns with their values. As the author says, “deciding how I will engage with [GenAI] has given me some peace of mind in a chaotic, ever-changing world.”

The Case for Enforcing Assignment Due Dates |
Due dates aren't just about discipline—they support the cognitive process of learning, allowing students to absorb, forget, and recall material, which leads to stronger long-term understanding. This Faculty Focus article, curated by Irena Kola (American Culture and English; CTE Faculty Teaching Associate), argues that while flexibility is important, enforcing deadlines helps promote authentic, lasting learning—and it can be done with empathy and understanding.
