New VP and associate provost appointed

James Schmiedeler, a professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering and associate dean for faculty advancement and inclusion in the College of Engineering, has been named vice president and associate provost for faculty recruitment support. His appointment begins January 1, 2027.

Fighting for robotic search and rescue

Margaret McGuinness, an assistant professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering, developed an extendable robot that grows like a vine and holds a camera to show rescuers the challenges they face getting to a victim trapped under rubble.
