Excessive heat warnings were in effect across Michigan last week, with temperatures in the 90s and heat indexes ranging from 100 to 110 degrees, acccording to the National Weather Service.
Keeping cool during heat waves means using precautions while taking care of yourself and those in your household so everyone stays safe. The National Weather Service issues advisories for high heat to warn of the dangers.
Here are some heat safety tips from the National Weather Service, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and Michigan State Police:
- Slow down and limit vigorous activity
- Try to reschedule outdoor activities during the morning or evening hours to avoid the hottest parts of the day
- Dress for the heat: Lightweight, light-colored apparel reflect heat and sunlight; wear clothing that allows for good air circulation
- Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water or non-alcoholic fluids because your body needs water to keep cool
- Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages because they cause dehydration
- Keep cool by spending more time in cooler places, particularly air-conditioned spaces
- If outside, avoid direct sunlight by staying in the shade
- Don't get too much sun; a sunburn makes heat dissipation more difficult for your body
