Nurturing Jewish Educators: Supporting Teachers During Challenging Times
On Monday, October 19, Hebrew School teachers and administrators from as close as Newton and as far as Montreal gathered on Zoom with David Moss (above), a Jerusalem-based artist whose artwork hangs throughout Hebrew College, to talk about their journeys over the past seven months of the pandemic; to explore artistic and creative expressions of journeys, maps and itineraries; and to discuss how to implement these ideas with their students.
This was the second fall session of Hebrew College's “For Our Teachers and Their Students,” a professional development program generously supported by CJP that brings together Jewish educators for conversation and learning during this time of physical isolation. Hebrew College’s Congregational Education Initiative (CEI) has been hosting these free Zoom sessions since March, expanding upon the professional development that it has offered to educators for many years and enabling teachers to continue participating in deep conversation and hands-on experiments that can transform student learning—even during the pandemic.

Bringing Mindfulness to Hebrew School Students
Amidst the uncertainty in the world, Hebrew school students at Temple Israel of Boston logged into Zoom rooms more than once a week last spring for optional moments of spirituality.
The students were continuing lessons they had begun in person before the pandemic, learning Mussar middot, or qualities, including humility, patience, gratitude, compassion, silence, truth, moderation, and loving kindness. They were also discovering the importance of mindfulness as a pathway to a meaningful and joyful life.
“Meditation was something I was nervous about when we moved online, but Zoom lends itself very well to meditation,” said Roberta Axeloons`19, assistant director of education at Temple Israel, who earned her masters in Jewish Education from Hebrew College. “It’s not just because of the mute button.”

Welcome Home: Becoming a Jewish Leader at Hebrew College
By Linna Ettinger, MJEd`12 Director, Hebrew College Open Circle Jewish Learning
When I look at my overflowing bookcase, I know I am home. All the books I have studied over the years at Hebrew College represent a gradual and steady pursuit of meaning and knowledge that started in my childhood.
I had a secular upbringing in Lincoln, Massachusetts—and my immigrant parents have always embraced what they observed were “American” customs. Dyeing and hiding eggs, eating marshmallow chicks and chocolate bunnies for Easter; Thanksgiving turkey dinners; and exchanging gifts at Christmas . . . .

Sunrise, SunsetParashat Chayei Sarah (Genesis 23:1-25:18) By Rabbi Shira Shazeer`10 Rabbi, Metrowest Jewish Day School in Framingham, MA, and current student in Hebrew College's Masters in Jewish Education program
Saturday night, the sun set early, bringing an end to Shabbat and a reminder that we’ve reached the darker portion of the year. And while my kids turned to their Zoom screens to spend the evening playing with their friends, I did something I rarely do. I turned on live television, and watched the speeches given by Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris and President-Elect Joe Biden. It was a historic moment; historic as a transition in leadership; historic because it comes in the midst of a global crisis; historic because it brings so many “firsts" to the office of Vice President, inspiring women, people of color, children of immigrants and others often marginalized in our society, with hope of growing representation in the highest ranks of our government. We’ll also have our first Jewish second gentleman.
