Letters from the Administration

PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Dear Parents and Guardians,
As 2019 is in full swing, I think it is a good time to hit the “pause button” and reflect on how we will spend this New Year.
WORDS TO LIVE BY
“The Dash”
I read of a reverend who stood to speak at the funeral of his friend.  He referred to the dates on her tombstone from the beginning – to the end. ... Continue reading.

VP FOR ACADEMIC LIFE LETTER

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of De La Salle,

Imagine my delight when I received this email from one of our teachers Mrs. Victoria Acquistapace, on January 31st saying 'Xander Friedman, Class of 2021, has successfully transformed mouse stem cell to Neural tissue. He will try today to artificially “clump” these cells as seen in Alzheimer’s then un-clump them with two biological agents.'  Yesterday, I received an email from Mr. Andrew Berkes, Religious Studies Department Chair, summarizing an activity his students performed that is part of our Mentors in Violence Prevention curriculum; when I ran into both him and one of his female students, they were excited to discuss how impactful the activity was. I relish the emails and the personal exchanges with faculty, staff, and students alike that ask us to celebrate student innovation and the creation of meaningful student communities.

ANNUAL FUND

Tax Season and Your Charitable Giving Benefits
Tax season is here! If you made a charitable gift to De La Salle in 2018, as long as you itemize your tax return, you will still be able to deduct your charitable gifts. When you are meeting with your tax specialist be sure to ask them about the benefits you will receive in 2018 and start planning for your charitable giving in 2019!
We are here to help you, too. Feel free to contact our Vice President for Advancement, Mark Chiarucci at (925) 288-8106 / chiaruccim@dlshs.org or Director of Development, Karla Wiese at (925) 288-8195 / wiesek@dlshs.org.

ATHLETICS

De La Salle ice hockey invites your son to be a part of our Varsity Sports team!
Ice hockey is one of the few team sports on the rise in popularity; the Tri Valley is a hotbed for high school hockey.  De La Salle is one of nine high school teams playing in a pure, high-school-based league in Dublin this spring.
  • Off-ice practices started in mid-January
  • We hit the ice in February
  • Games start in March and are played once a week
The sport is fast, fun, and exciting, and the league is non-check, which means the checking (and fights) people often associate with professional hockey are not allowed. All players wear helmets with protective cages, ensuring their pearly whites stay intact.
The De La Salle ice hockey team is now in its sixth season. We are looking for new players, not only to build our lines, but also to ensure that this fun and proud tradition continues in the years to come. Beginners to the sport are welcome, no experience is required. No gear? We can help with that as well. Our coaches, players, and families are proud of their team and want to see it grow. De La Salle Ice Hockey is a great way to learn a new sport, make new friends, and have a lot of fun!
And if the success and popularity of quad hockey in the fall is any indication, our boys really enjoy the sport and competition.
If you're at all curious, please contact Heidi Huber at (925) 336-9233 or icehockey@dlshs.org. For more information, click on this link to access an Ice Hockey flyer (pdf).

2019 CRAB FEED

De La Salle would like to thank everyone who attended the 2019 De La Salle Crab Feed, making it a successful event. We love seeing new families, alumni families, faculty and staff, and longtime De La Salle supporters every year at this event. The fact that the 2019 Crab Feed sold out in less than five minutes is a true testament to how much this event means to everyone.
Special thanks go out to Parent Association Board Member and Crab Feed Chair Lynne Kenny, Parent Volunteer Coordinator Kim Newman, De La Salle Manager of Advancement Events Gina Longmire, Kitchen Leads Debbie and Nelson Meeks, and Décor Leads Jeanne Roder and Lori Butler for organizing such a fun evening. Additionally, this event would not be possible without our Spartan servers and parent volunteers who did a wonderful job before, during, and after the event to make sure everything went smoothly.
Thanks to our food suppliers, the Newport Fish Company, Justin Kinder of Kinder’s Meats, and the De La Salle Kitchen Staff for the delicious food, and Semifreddi’s Bakery, Calicraft Brewing Company, Norm Peters, Mitchell Katz, and Concord Disposal for their generous donations.

MOMS IN PRAYER

What if you could change the world – not just for today but also for generations to come? Moms in Prayer (MIP) is a program where moms come together to pray, specifically and scripturally, for the lives of our children, the schools, and our Spartan and Cougar communities.
We have a group exclusive to De La Salle and Carondelet moms that meets weekly at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Walnut Creek. Join us for this powerful time of prayer and fellowship, at our new time, Tuesdays from 1-2:30 p.m. We meet when school is in session, and do NOT meet on holidays, extended breaks, teacher work days, etc. We meet in the Mullens Commons on the lower east side of the building. We also have evening meetings for those who cannot attend during the day. Contact Spartan mom, Teresa Drake for more details.
Confidentiality is our watchword: “What’s prayed here, stays here.”

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

National Honor Society (NHS) applications were made available on Schoology on February 1. Applications are due to the Student Services Office no later than Friday, March 1 (late applications will not be accepted).
Any student with a 3.5 unweighted Grade Point Average is eligible for NHS. National Honor Society is a service group that helps out with tutoring in the Learning Center, directing parents on Back to School Night, leading tours for Open House, and serving at the Crab Feed.
