Calendar Reminders

October 3:  Academy Parents Council (APC) Meeting in Shelburne Falls (details on school calendar)
October 7: Ashfield Fall Festival APC Pie Sale

FROM THE ACADEMY PARENTS COUNCIL (APC)

Please Retake the Parent Involvement Survey before October 6

The information from the parent survey done on registration day was lost. Please help us recover the information by taking one minute to fill out the survey right now to let us know how you can help this year. The survey will remain live until Friday, October 6. Apologies for the inconvenience and thank you for your time!

Pie Bakers Wanted

Thanks to all those who have already volunteered to bake pies for the October 7 (next Saturday) APC Pie Sale at the Ashfield Fall Festival.  We have a projected 50 pies to date. We sold 79 donated pies in 2016 and raised over $1,400 for APC support of The Academy's staff and students. Providentially, we installed fans in the hottest classrooms last spring. In previous years we purchased the school's customized pop up tent, donated funds towards staff professional development and provided much needed coffee for the staff.  Every pie is a future 100% investment in The Academy.
Please contact Diane Bigelow or Paul Catanzaro if you have not yet signed up to bake and would like to. We will contact bakers with specifics this weekend.  Pie tins and boxes are available at The Academy.  All varieties of pies are accepted: apple, blueberry, peach, pecan, pumpkin, gluten free crusted.....your specialty!  If baking pies isn't your thing, let us know if you are able to help sell the pies on the day of the event.

Join Us for our First APC Meeting of the School Year

Every parent is a part of the Academy Parent's Council (APC)! The first APC meeting will be Tuesday, October 3rd starting at 6:30 at the home of Janet Mullen and Noah Grunberg P20 at 9 Gardner Avenue, Shelburne Falls. This meeting will include a ddescription and update on the new honors program. This is a great opportunity to hear what is happening at The Academy and connect with other parents.

Annual Giving - Every Gift Matters and Parent Participation is Very Important

The Academy is a community effort. We all contribute in ways that we can to ensure the success of our children's education and development.  Sometimes that means contributing time or talent and sometimes that means contributing money. The Academy's Annual Fund is an opportunity to demonstrate that we are a committed community. The amount of money that you contribute is less important than the fact that we as parents have stepped up and made an additional contribution beyond tuition, just like faculty and staff step up and give additional time and effort for our children every day. Please make a commitment to a donation to the 2017-2018 Annual Fund, in any amount.

As the Immersive Theater group's October 20-21 performances grow closer they are looking to collect the props and costume pieces necessary for their show.  Specifically, they are seeing white sheets which will be returned after use in good condition (but please be aware that there is a risk factor involved), and oil lanterns. Please contact Solly C if you are able to lend these items.

SOCIAL JUSTICE COUNCIL INITIATIVE

In an effort to do our part to create communities of hope, the Social Justice Council has taken on the task of spreading the "Hate Has No Home Here" message through the distribution of yard signs and posters bearing that slogan and logo. From its website, the "Hate Has No Home Here" initiative "began with a group of neighbors from North Park, a Chicago neighborhood characterized by its diversity of age, race, nationality and ethnicity. Many ties bind the residents of North Park to one another; the most notable is the neighborhood school, Peterson Elementary School, where the student body mimics the demographics of the neighborhood and where educators and families are committed to celebrating diversity. The phrase used in this poster was imagined by a third grader and kindergartener at Peterson Elementary School. In solidarity with this campaign, we hope to spread the word. The Council has purchased 100 yard signs and is making them available to our community for a minimum donation of $5/sign (our cost). These can be purchased in the main office. Additional proceeds will be used to produce posters similar to the ones hanging on doors around campus, also for distribution.

Phakchok Rinpoche to Present on Radical Happiness - October 10

Phakchok Rinpoche, a Tibetan Buddhist monk, will offer a presentation to the Academy community on "radical happiness" on Tuesday, October 10 at 2:15 PM. Speaking at schools in many east coast locations, this presentation promises to benefit anyone who is struggling to keep a balance in life between work (or school!) and family, coping with the fast pace of daily life, a career and at the same time aspiring to flourish and grow: intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. Despite Mr. Rinpoche's origins, this is a secular presentation, not focused on Buddhism. One and all are welcome to attend.

PSAT TEST OCTOBER 11th FOR SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS

The PSAT/NMSQT will be held at The Academy on October 11th. All 10th and 11th grade students will participate. Students have received a student guide and they should read it and complete the practice questions in preparation.
Students are not supposed to stress over this test. Its purpose is to give the student, family, school administration, and college counselor familiarity with the format and an indication as to college readiness. Colleges do not see the results of this exam. However, students should take the PSAT seriously and try their best. Questions can be addressed to Mr. Gay.

Blood Drive - October 13

The Red Cross returns to campus for their twice yearly Blood Drive at The Academy! The Blood Drive will be held on Friday, October 13, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM. Students will be bringing home donor forms (and parental consent forms, for students age 16), with the goal of every student finding at least one person to donate blood. Appointments can be made by filling out the donor form and turning it in to the Main Office, or by calling the Main Office during regular business hours, or by visiting the Red Cross Blood Drive appointment page and entering our zip code. Baked goods for donors are also a high priority, so there are ways for everyone to lend a hand. We appreciate in advance your support of this important service event that both saves lives and helps provide scholarship money to our seniors towards their first year of college tuition!

Parent Roundtable Discussions at GCC with
Aethena Enzer-Mahler, LICSW

We are pleased to be once again offering parents the opportunity to meet with The Academy's psychological consultant and school counselor, Aethena Enzer-Mahler. Aethena will cover important points about the developmental stages of students in the grade levels indicated, as well as address any questions or concerns that parents might have. These evenings are sure to provide great food for thought, whether or not you have concerns about your child's mental health or emotional well-being. We hope that the Greenfield location will provide a space more central to the majority of parents. The discussions will be held in the The MacLeish Conference Room (Room C307) near the library on the 3rd floor of GCC's main building at 1 College Drive. Please contact Nora Bates Zale with questions or concerns. The dates and times of these nights are as follows:
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17:  7:00-8:30 PM- 7th & 8th Grade Parents
TUESDAY NOVEMBER 9:  7:00-8:30 PM- 9th & 10th Grade Parents
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 5:  7:00-8:30 PM- 11th & 12th Grade Parents
