Is Your Name on the 2020 Unclaimed Checks List?
Last month, I announced that my office's unclaimed checks list had been published. Did you know my office may have money in your name waiting for you to claim it? You can find out by viewing our unclaimed checks list at www.myorangeclerk.com. If you see your name on the list, by statute, you have until September 1, 2020 to claim the money.
The checks on the list were mailed, but never cashed.
There are many reasons this occurs, including if the intended recipient moved away and did not leave a
forwarding address, put the check away and forgot about it, and more.
Whether you’re an individual, business, or organization, make sure to view the unclaimed checks list. Our
customers are a priority and I want them to receive the money that is rightfully theirs. That is why every year we go above and beyond to spread the word about our unclaimed checks list.

Relief Funding Helps Orange County Clerk of Courts Avert Office Closures
The Orange County Clerk of Courts has averted closing offices and implementing furloughs after the Orange County Board of Commissioners voted to approve $1.5 million in emergency relief funding for my office.
This relief funding means the Clerk’s Office will be able to continue to operate during regular business hours Monday through Friday for all services which are normally provided.
I am very grateful the Board of County Commissioners recognized our urgent need. This relief funding helps avert a major impact on the public and courts as my office provides critical and essential services per statute, to circuit and county courts. This action also helps my staff avoid any potential financial hardship that the furlough would have created.
The effect COVID-19 has had on Florida’s Clerks of Court has been severe, because of the unique way the offices are funded under Florida law. Clerks have no statutory authority to create or maintain a reserve or emergency fund. Clerks are funded by fines, and fees and court costs which they collect, and which have been greatly reduced during the pandemic
The pandemic has created a major financial challenge for Clerks of the Court across the state requiring a $60 million reduction in operating budgets. This resulted in a cut of $3.85 million to the Orange County Clerk’s court operations budget. This amounts to a 53.04% cut to my office’s 4th quarter budget.
While this emergency funding is a significant relief for my office, Clerk’s Offices across the state continue to  work closely with the Governor’s Office to try and obtain other relief funding to fill the gap.

Letters of Courage Initiative Helps Survivors of Domestic Violence
I am immensely proud of our Clerks CARE Ambassadors and deputy clerks who continue to demonstrate their passion for giving back to the community even during these challenging times. A special thank you to all of those who participated in our “Letters of Courage” initiative to write letters of encouragement and support to domestic violence survivors. We received a grand total of 100 letters from our deputy clerks which include poems, banners, small gifts and one deputy clerk even took the time to write 365 positive quotes.
These will all be delivered to our key partner Harbor House of Central Florida who will assist us in distributing them to their Women's Shelter.
As you may know, Domestic Violence Awareness and prevention is a vital topic to me. At the Clerk of Courts, our Family Services Injunctions team assists those affected by domestic abuse, repeat, sexual, dating and stalking violence to obtain restraining orders. We hope that we are able to lift the spirits of survivors through this initiative.
