From Research to Real-World Impact: SANDI’s Journey
Wednesday February 25 | 12p-1p | 1400 18th Ave S Rm A2009
This seminar unpacks the black box of what it takes to move a research innovation from the lab into the world through the journey of SANDI, a research-backed driver readiness learning platform designed to support safe, confident mobility for neurodiverse learners. Bringing together research and entrepreneurial perspectives, the session will examine the handoffs, tensions, and tradeoffs encountered as SANDI moves from the academic ecosystem into market realities, from prototype validation and market discovery to funding, pricing, and launch. Pizza lunch provided.

Dr. Golnaz Arastoopour Irgens awarded Jan Hawkins Award by AERA Division C
LIVE is very excited to announce that faculty member Dr. Golnaz Arastoopur Irgens will receive the 2026 Jan Hawkins Award for Early Career Contributions to Humanistic Research and Scholarship in Learning Technologies. This prestigious award recognizes a body of early-career scholarship that advances innovative ways of understanding and designing learning technologies while centering the meaning-making and priorities of young people and educators to drive system-level improvements responsive to today’s evolving educational landscape.

Dr. Arastoopur Irgens’ scholarship exemplifies the award's vision. Her research integrates the design of inclusive digital learning environments with sophisticated analytic approaches to examine how young learners develop both technical understanding of AI systems and critical awareness of their social and ethical implications. Using design-based research and participatory methods, she works with teachers, students, and community partners to co-design learning experiences that position students as active designers and creators, grounded in the realities of local educational contexts. Taken together, her research agenda reflects a sustained commitment to advancing technology-supported approaches to learning while remaining closely attuned to the educational settings in which those technologies are designed, enacted, and experienced.

Analyzing Embodied Learning in Classroom Settings: A Human-in-the-loop AI Approach for Multimodal Learning Analytics
A team of LIVE researchers and collaborators including doctoral students Joyce Fonteles, Clayton Cohn and Efrat Ayalon, along with Drs. Gautam Biswas, Noel Enyedy and many others, recently published an exciting new approach to multimodal learning analytics in Learning and Instruction. Their work introduces a human-in-the-loop AI framework that combines multimodal learning analytics,
