University of New Orleans biologist Erin Cox and her students are delving into the depths of the northern Gulf of Mexico and fishing for answers that could impact a popular south Louisiana past time—recreational fishing. Their research will explore the levels of potentially harmful pollutants in fish caught by recreational anglers.

UNO Biologist Wendy Schluchter Receives a Nearly $750K Department of Energy Research Grant
|
University of New Orleans biology professor Wendy Schluchter has received a nearly $750,000 Department of Energy grant to study and deconstruct the fluorescent pigmentation process of photosynthetic microbes called cyanobacteria, once referred to as blue green algae.
The deciphered details of that pigmentation process, Schluchter said, could be used to track proteins in order to study various diseases in mice models and in cultures of human cells, or that could be used to engineer increased biofuel production by cyanobacteria.

| High School Students Combine Art with Technology at UNO Virtual Reality Camp
|
Twenty students from high schools across the New Orleans area convened at the University of New Orleans' Fine Arts department for three weeks this summer to take part in UNO's inaugural Virtual Reality Summer Camp. Campers attended workshops covering C# programming for the Unity game engine and 3D modeling using Blender.

| EES Graduate Student Studies Coastal Water Management in the Netherlands
|
Marley Allen, graduate student in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) and EES alumna Carrie Miller, '19 participated in the second cohort of a summer program designed to provide graduate training in advanced techniques for coastal water management, including hands-on training in Delft3D-FM (hydrodynamic modeling).

Students talked to faculty and staff to learn more about our majors and took tours of sciences departments to see classrooms, labs and other resources. Adam Quade, graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences, presented at the Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists conference in Norfolk, VA. Quade presented a talk entitled, "Floodplain connectivity mediates the abundance, behavior, and size-class distribution of the associated fish community."

Dr. Frank E. Juge, Jr. '62 will be recognized as the College of Sciences Honoree at the 2023 Homer L. Hitt Distinguished Alumni Gala. Juge is an emeritus professor of chemistry at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. He spent 51 years at UCF as a faculty member and administrator, including 12 years developing and teaching wine courses in the Rosen College of Hospitality Management. He holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from UNO.
Taking place on Nov. 9, 2023, the gala honors alumni who have distinguished themselves in their field and who provide service to their communities and the University.
