Acclaimed novelist and University of New Orleans alumnus Maurice Carlos Ruffin will serve as the principal speaker at the University’s fall 2023 commencement ceremony, which will take place at the UNO Lakefront Arena on Friday, Dec. 8 at 1 p.m.

Counselor Education Student Wins National Dissertation Award
|
Heather Olivier, a May 2023 doctoral graduate from the University of New Orleans counselor education program, won a prestigious national award for her dissertation. Olivier received the Associated for Counselor Education Education & Supervision (ACES) Outstanding Dissertation Award.

Additionally, associate professor Dr. Christopher Belser was selected for the ACES Distinguished Professional Service Award, granted to one Counselor Educator each year. The humbling part is that the nomination came from two recent graduates of our program.
Adding in the research grant previously awarded to Michelle Wade and Victoria Rodriguez over the summer, ACES members are getting very acquainted with all that's going on at UNO this year.

| Professor Emerita Pat Austin Celebrates the Release of Her New Book of Poetry

Pat Austin, University of New Orleans professor emerita and decades-long curator of the UNO Children’s and Young Adult Library, is celebrating the release of her memoir about teaching, “Tales of a Teaching Life.” The book launch [was] held on Thursday, Oct. 19, in the Earl K. Long Library, Room 407, at 5 p.m.

Doctoral Student Works with Center Austria on Foreign Policy

UNO doctoral student Amin Aghjeh was born and raised in Iran. His love for philosophy and international relations brought him first to the University of Vienna in Austria. From 2015-2019, Amin studied philosophy, politics and history and earned his master's degree.

| UNO Counseling Student Awarded Military Scholarship
|
Jen LeCompte, a student in the University of New Orleans counselor education master’s program, has been selected for a military scholarship through the National Board for Certified Counselors. The scholarship was created to increase the number of counselors available to serve military personnel and families.

‘The Casual Presence of Borders,’ A Book of Poetry from Longtime Faculty Member Mackie Blanton Published by UNO Press
|
The University of New Orleans Press has published “The Casual Presence of Borders,” a book of poetry from longtime faculty member Mackie J.V. Blanton. Blanton spent 25 years at the University of New Orleans as an English professor and associate dean of student life before retiring in 2005.

Congratulations to Joe Cipollone '18 for being named one of only eight Exemplary Educator by the Louisiana Department of Education. He currently serves as the supervisor of special education for middle and high schools in St. Bernard Parish.

| Alumna Angela D. Brooks '99 will give the Rachel Dorothy Tanur Memorial Lecture at Harvard University on November 1. Brooks is the current President of the American Planning Association, and her talk is entitled, "No Place Like Home."
