UCSB New Student Training Requirements |
Dear incoming student,
Welcome! At UC Santa Barbara, you are joining a thriving community of creative and intelligent peers, and we look forward to your contributions to the campus. As part of UCSB’s comprehensive approach to education, safety, and our dedication to an inclusive campus climate, all new undergraduate students are required to complete online training modules to prepare you for the standards to which the campus and your peers will hold you accountable. Each module is based in research around the best practices for healthy communities.
Additionally, when you arrive on campus you will be required to complete a Gaucho FYI webinar. Gaucho FYI is a mandatory Zoom webinar program that has been developed to introduce new students to a variety of health and safety topics. The webinar must be completed during the first four weeks of fall quarter.
The following modules & action items must be completed by the indicated deadlines:

Addictive Behaviors & Recovery Module (via UCSB Canvas): This module aims to empower students in making informed decisions around addictive behaviors and recovery (ABR) and introduces UCSB services designed to build a campus culture that supports wellbeing, informed decision-making, and recovery. To access the module, sign into UCSB Canvas with your UCSB NetID and password. The course will take approximately 60 minutes to complete. This should be completed before you arrive on campus for the fall quarter.

Policy Acknowledgements: All students are required to complete policy acknowledgment tasks in GOLD, which include viewing a 30-minute video on Civil Rights and Open Expression on campus. The video can be viewed here. Per California Senate Bill 1287, students are required to acknowledge the student code of conduct as a condition of enrollment in a UC campus. You can access the student code of conduct website to learn more about your rights and responsibilities as a member of the UC Santa Barbara community. This should be completed before you arrive on campus for the fall quarter.

SHAPE (Sexual Violence and Harassment, Anti-Discrimination, Prevention and Education) Student Training (via UCSB Canvas): All students are required to complete the student SHAPE training, the University of California’s annual prevention education course. The SHAPE training provides a comprehensive overview of University policies, campus resources, and strategies for preventing harm and fostering a respectful, inclusive community. To access the module, sign into UCSB Canvas with your UCSB NetID and password. The due date for this training is October 30, 2026.

StandUp to Hazing (via StopHazing): Click here to complete this module! It will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. StopHazing is the leader in hazing prevention research and is dedicated to building research-based educational tools, such as this course, to prevent hazing, develop ethical leadership and bystander intervention skills, and help students build healthy groups that foster belonging and amplify well-being. This should be completed before you arrive on campus for the fall quarter.

Sign up for Gaucho FYI! You will need to attend a Gaucho FYI webinar during the first four weeks of fall quarter. Several webinars are taking place during the Week of Welcome before classes begin.
