Fling in the Spring: May 21

Our annual spring day of fun takes place on Tuesday, May 21 this year! We will hold studio blocks first thing, to be followed by a carnival put on by the seniors, a Roman Banquet (consumed while reclining in togas, of course) and some Latin theatrics. The day will finish with Team Olympics.

Though some of what was shared in last week's Bulletin regarding Fling in the Spring remains the same (Namely, carnival and Team Olympics fun! Togas [everyone should bring a flat sheet to wear as a toga]!), we will instead be charging community members for the meal ($7.50), and will have a sign-up sheet on Monday. The menu will include grilled chicken, feta, olives, foccacia, and lots of fruit! Vegetarian and gluten-free/dairy-free options will also be made available, as always.

Students in the concert should return to Memorial Hall at 6 PM dressed to impress.

Classroom Close-up:  Biology

Biology students created experiments to test photosynthesis under various conditions. They made leaf disc samples sink in a buffer solution and then timed how long it took the discs to float as a measure of the rate of oxygen production via photosynthesis under various conditions.

ERDING-CHARLEMONT EXCHANGE 2019: A Great Opportunity!

We are looking for two Academy students and families interested in hosting two 10th graders from Erding, Germany, during the fall of 2019. Erding students visit us every year as part of the longstanding Erding-Charlemont Exchange. The American host students are then invited to go to Germany the following summer. The host families on both sides of the Atlantic are expected to provide room and board and are expected to show the student around the region. There is a $500 family stipend available to help defray related expenses. Erding students will be here next fall from approximately October 22 to December 22.

Please take a look at the four brief bios of applicants Sina Marie, Jacob, Matthias, and Moritz and discuss this wonderful opportunity with your family. FYI: While preference is given to rising 10th graders, Academy hosts do not have to be in 10th grade.  We will only invite a total of two students from Erding.

To learn more about the Erding-Charlemont Exchange in general, please click here. Contact Steph Powers or Sabine Mauri if interested.

HOST AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT NEXT YEAR!

Sarah, a 15-year-old girl living in Libramont, Belgium is very excited to be joining The Academy community next year as an 11th grader!

To make this work, we first have to find her a host family. Please consider this wonderful opportunity!

Living with a host family will be an amazing experience for Sarah, just as it will be the family. Sarah is a fabulous singer who also likes skiing (she'll love that Berkshire East is so close!). She also likes kickboxing and swimming. Her parents describe her as joyful and a great student. Sarah helps at home by washing dishes, cleaning her room, vacuuming, doing laundry and cooking, so plan on eating a few Belgian dishes with her.

Sarah has wanted to come to the US for a very long time. "I have been dreaming about it since I was a little child. I have always dreamed to attend a real baseball match," she says. More recently, she decided it was time to have this experience after seeing how much her brother loved going to school in New Zealand.

Sarah will be coming to us via the PAX program. Contact local coordinator and Academy parent Jackie Walsh for more information about Sarah and about PAX, at 413-625-9413 or by email.

SPORTS RECAP, WEEK OF MAY 13

Middle school Ultimate played two games this week. After a tough loss at Bement on Tuesday, the team had a thrilling game on Wednesday against Four Rivers. After fighting back from an early deficit, the team nearly climbed out with a victory but eventually lost 15-10. Charlie P had 9 assists and Julien TC scored three times. Zeb F, Emmy PC, Chanina K, Addie C, Skye L, and Paloma HS also recorded scores.

The Academy JV Ultimate team exhibited continuing signs of improvement in Wednesday's RVAL tournament, held at Greenfield Community College. Though the group lost games to the Four Rivers varsity (one of the best teams in the state), PVPA, Eagle Hill, and PVCICS, Aardvark spirit remained high throughout the afternoon. Numerous outstanding plays were made by a wide array of individuals, including Everett M (handling and receiving), Anna P-C (handling and scoring a goal), Sam R (diving catches and throwing), Nick F (defense and both scoring and assisting on goals), Ruby C (scoring and assisting), and Anders G-B, who was remarkable in every aspect of play.  A special shout-out goes to Lane M and Kathleen S, who were very helpful in their roles as captains for the day.

Varsity Ultimate went 2 and 2, placing 7th out of 16 teams at the RVAL tournament on Wednesday. A first game win against Putney featured excellent offense and defense from Solly C, Avery M, and Chessie R-C, as well as strong all-around showings by Raymond M and Izzy B. In the second game, this time against Hartsbrook, the Aardvarks started off strong and then faltered later in the game. Nat B-O had an exceptional game, factoring in three of our four goals and racking up several Ds. Calla J and Sylvie M also had crucial scores in the game. Tucker Z-A had an amazing catch in the game close to the endzone that he converted quickly to an assist. In the third game, a loss to 4 Rivers girls' varsity, our defense racked up an impressive number of Ds, but the Aardvarks struggled to convert these to points. Talos P, Chessie R-C, and Will D all had strong defensive games. The final game of the day for us ended in a victory against Buxton. Elaina G-B and Ishan had excellent showings on both offense and defense. Tucker Z-A threw 4 assists, Chessie R-C threw two, and Solly C, Talos P, and Lila G all scored points as well. Our team enjoyed the beautiful weather and spirited play from our opponents and would like to appreciate the support shown by our fans.
